Overview

Take a trip to Yangon on your Myanmar Vacation

Yangon, also known as Rangoon, is the largest city in Myanmar (formerly Burma). The Burmese capital city until late 2005, Yangon is the capital of the Yangon Region and is the country's main gateway on a Myanmar tour.

Yangon has the largest number of colonial buildings in Southeast Asia. Under British rule in the 19th century, colleges, hospitals, modern buildings and infrastructure were developed, making Rangoon the commercial centre of Burma.

Eventually gaining its independence in 1948, Yangon still remains an amalgamation of British, Burmese, Chinese and Indian influences.

Yangon is famous for its glittering Shwedagon Pagoda. This prominent Buddhist landmark dominates Yangon’s skyline and can be seen for miles around as it towers to a height of 326 feet on Theingottara Hill. Recorded as being more than 2600 years old, Shwedagon Pagoda is the world’s oldest, historical pagoda. Although having to be rebuilt several times, including after a damaging earthquake in the 18th century, Shwedagon Pagoda is Myanmar’s largest symbol of Buddhism.

On a Myanmar vacation, Yangon offers other cultural and religious sights, as well as museums, parks, and lakes. Its tourism industry is only now beginning to flourish as recent improvements in the country's political climate have attracted both tourists and businessmen.

I love learning about Nicaragua's culture and experiencing its Spanish influence in some cities. I was only there for five days, but I'll never forget how delicious the food was and how welcoming and extremely polite the people were.

The Day of the Dead in Guatemala is a great local tradition where people gather to fly giant, intricately decorated kites to honour the dead.

Festival de Los Farolitos is an annual nighttime festival held every September in the town of Ataco, where the streets, houses, and plazas are illuminated with thousands of handmade lanterns (farolitos). Families craft them using colored paper, wood, calabash gourds, or jars, each with a candle inside. Although it's tied to the eve of the Virgin Mary’s birthday, it has evolved into a cultural celebration of community, light, creativity, and town pride.
