Overview
Take a trip to Mount Kilimanjaro on your Tanzania Vacation
Mount Kilimanjaro is a dormant volcano in Tanzania's Kilimanjaro Region. It boasts three volcanic cones, namely Mawenzi, Kibo, and Shira. As the highest mountain in Africa and the tallest free-standing peak at 19,340 ft (5,895 m) globally, it attracts both seasoned hikers and novices alike.
Known as the easiest of the seven summits, Kilimanjaro requires no technical climbing skills or specialized equipment like ropes or ice axes. Many climbers start the journey with little to no prior hiking experience. Kilimanjaro National Park welcomes visitors year-round, but the best time to climb is during the dry season, which runs from June to October. You'll need a licensed guide, porters, and a cook to tackle Kilimanjaro. Popular routes for summiting include Lemosho and Machame, typically taking 7–8 days. Alternatively, the Marangu Route offers a less strenuous six-day roundtrip trek through diverse landscapes, from rainforests to deserts.
