During Day of the Dead celebrations, an Andean drink known as colada morada—a rich purple beverage made with fruits such as blackberries, blueberries, naranjilla, and pineapple combined with spices—is commonly imbibed. Another strong Ecuadorian spirit is aguardiente, made from sugar cane.

Since many places in Ecuador are at high elevations, drink sparingly until your body becomes adjusted to the conditions.

Ecuador uses the U.S. dollar as its official currency. A valid passport is required for entry to the country. For visitors from most countries, no visa is required.

Weather varies drastically by region, so pack flexibly, bringing layers and waterproof items of clothing. Altitude sickness can affect travelers in the Andes. To avoid it, acclimatize slowly by ascending gradually and spending time at intermediate altitudes, stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, and avoid alcohol and strenuous exercise for the first 48 hours at high elevation.

Drinking the local tap water isn’t recommended—use bottled or filtered water instead.

Domestic flights are the best way to travel between major cities in Ecuador. Visiting the Galapagos generally requires booking well in advance.
