Overview

Take a trip to Manuel Antonio National Park on your Costa Rica Vacation

Located on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica in the Central Pacific Conservation Area is Manuel Antonio, National Park. Despite being small in size, covering just 1,983 hectares, the park is home to a wide variety of wildlife and biodiversity to be seen on a Costa Rica vacation.

The park was created in 1972 because the local population wanted to preserve the forests of one of the most beautiful and diverse areas in the world. Manuel Antonio became Costa Rica’s first ecotourism destination supporting a combination of rainforest, beaches and coral reefs. It provides a habitat for over 100 mammal species and more than 180 bird species. Dolphins are common off the coast, fishing is excellent and at times, migrating whales can be spotted.

Manuel Antonio National Park is best known for its beaches and hiking trails. Four beaches are located within the boundaries of the park: Manuel Antonio, Espadilla Sur, Tesoro and Playita and they are all connected by trails that head through the rainforest. The beaches provide opportunities for scuba diving, snorkelling, swimming and sea kayaking while the trails are great for hiking and mountain biking. This is the smallest national park in Costa Rica yet it remains increasingly popular with both local and international tourists on Costa Rica vacations who come in large numbers annually to discover this incredibly beautiful ecotourist destination.

If your main interest is beach time, December to April offers the best weather. However do not discount visiting during the Green Season in September, which reveals a different side of the country, full of wildlife and vibrant scenery.
