Overview

Take a trip to Mandalay on your Myanmar Vacation

Located on the east bank of the Irrawaddy (Ayeyarwady) River, Mandalay is Myanmar’s second-largest city, and capital city of the Mandalay region, an interesting destination on a Myanmar tour.

Mandalay is the economic hub of Upper Burma, acting as its commercial, educational, and health centre.

A fairly new city, Mandalay was founded in 1857 by King Mindon, at the foot of Mandalay Hill, and acted as the Burmese royal capital until British rule.

I love learning about Nicaragua's culture and experiencing its Spanish influence in some cities. I was only there for five days, but I'll never forget how delicious the food was and how welcoming and extremely polite the people were.

The Day of the Dead in Guatemala is a great local tradition where people gather to fly giant, intricately decorated kites to honour the dead.

Festival de Los Farolitos is an annual nighttime festival held every September in the town of Ataco, where the streets, houses, and plazas are illuminated with thousands of handmade lanterns (farolitos). Families craft them using colored paper, wood, calabash gourds, or jars, each with a candle inside. Although it's tied to the eve of the Virgin Mary’s birthday, it has evolved into a cultural celebration of community, light, creativity, and town pride.

History

During the colonial era, in spite of the British delegating Yangon as the new Burmese commercial and political hub, Mandalay became the centre of Burmese culture and Buddhist teachings and was regarded by the Burmese as a primary symbol of sovereignty and identity.

Before and during Burmese independence, which came in 1948, Mandalay had gone through a process of deterioration. With a high population of Chinese immigrating from Yunnan and Sichuan Province in the 1980s, the city began rebuilding and has become a major trade centre for Lower Burma, Upper Burma, China and India.
