Overview
Take a trip to South Dakota on your United States vacation.
South Dakota is a U.S. state in the North Central region of the United States. It is also part of the Great Plains, a broad expanse of North American flatland. It is the seventeenth-largest state by area but the fifth least populous. Sioux Falls is the largest city, followed by Rapid City.
The Missouri River serves as a boundary between eastern and western South Dakota. West of the river the landscape becomes more arid and rugged, consisting of rolling hills, plains, ravines, and the famous flat-topped hills called “buttes.” In the South lie the eerily beautiful Badlands.
Follow the trail of Lewis & Clark, explore museums and dinosaur digs, and experience the Wild West of legends: South Dakota is extraordinarily rich in natural beauty, history, and culture. Ranching, farming, and tourism are the state’s main industries, buttressed by income from the famous annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, attracting about 500,000 people.
The Black Hills region offers one of the largest concentrations of national parks, monuments and caves in the Midwest, including the historic Wild West town of Deadwood, Mount Rushmore, Wind Cave National Park, Jewel Cave National Monument, and Custer State Park, famous for its abundant bison herds. Fishing and hunting are popular outdoor activities in South Dakota.
