Overview
Take a trip to Vanua Levu on your Fiji Vacation
Vanua Levu (translated means big island) is Fiji’s second largest island located 64 kilometres/40 miles north of the main island of Viti Levu. It is a peaceful and relaxing place but it can also be a lively and exciting island to visit on a Fiji vacation.
This region has an extensive system of coral reefs, tropical rainforests, sugar cane fields, coconut groves, pine forests, copra plantations, sandy beaches and bays surrounded by one of the world’s longest barrier reefs. The southeastern part of the island is the most populated with indigenous Fijians and is filled with a beautiful landscape and wonderful views of the Pacific Ocean.
Labasa is the largest town and the centre of the sugar cane industry. Savusavu, a small town is the centre of the tourist industry. This can be seen by the number of yachts moored in the harbour. Two of the main sporting activities in Vanua Levu are scuba diving and sailing.

For first-time visitors, I suggest splitting their stay to experience a few nights at a resort along the Coral Coast, where they could experience a visit to a local village, then end their trip at one of the islands in the Mamanucas to experience some different beaches and activities. For returning visitors, I recommend exploring a different group of islands, such as heading to one of the Northern Islands, which is a short flight from Nadi.
