Overview

Take a trip to Rio de Janeiro on your Brazil Vacation

The third largest metropolitan area in South America and one of the most visited cities in the southern hemisphere, Rio de Janeiro, commonly referred to as just Rio, is located on a strip of Brazil’s Atlantic coast, close to the Tropic of Capricorn, a must destination on Brazil tours.

Portuguese explorers first arrived on the western shores of Rio in January 1503 giving way to its name Rio de Janeiro, or January River. The city was later formally established in March 1565.  Rio went on to be the capital of Brazil for nearly two centuries beginning during the Portuguese colonial era in 1763 and concluding when the capital was moved to Brasília in 1960.

During the 1930s the city gained a reputation as a fantastic beach and party destination, a reputation that is still strong today. Rio has much to look forward to, being one of the host cities of the 2014 World Cup and securing the bid for the 2016 Summer Olympics.

Many consider Carnival, an annual festival full of music, samba dancing and partying, to be the best reason to visit Rio on a Brazil vacation package. However, it is really just one of many. Rio is a beautiful city famous for breathtaking landscapes that include gorgeous mountains, white sand beaches and stunning rainforests. A laid-back beach culture coexists with a busy metropolis making Rio an ever-popular tourist destination on Brazil vacations.

If you are looking for some excitement on your next trip, then a Rio de Janeiro vacation is a great place to start. Book your trip today....and put some spice into your life!!

Brazil is great to visit all year round, but December to March is ideal for experiencing the vibrant summer energy and major events like Carnaval. For those who want to search for wildlife in the Amazon & Pantanal, I would suggest April to October

Travelers must plan for diverse weather as the country ranges from tropical in the north (Amazon rainforest -with high humidity and rain) to temperate in the south, with hot, dry inland areas and a semi-arid Northeast region experiencing less rain

There is so much to love about Brazil. Not only does it have stunning natural beauty - think the Amazon rainforest or its famous beaches - but it has such a vibrant and diverse culture filled with music, dance and delicious food
