Top 5 Itineraries for a Small Group Tour of Italy

Tell me more

A small group tour feels more comfortable and intimate, and that can have a bearing on your overall trip experience. If you're not into waiting in long lines or tagging along in a large group, downsize and see the difference! Going small also increases the flexibility to include experiences that may be unfeasible when more people are involved. This holds true when you're in Italy, a land rich in history, architecture, culture and culinary flavours. Here are the top places to visit on a small group tour of Italy.

Rome to Apulia, Amalfi Coast & Naples

A walking tour of Rome is perfect for viewing the architectural marvels and fascinating history of Ancient, Christian, and Baroque Rome. At Apulia, you can stay at a Trulli home, a hobbit-like cylindrical-shaped dwelling with a conical roof. Enjoy cheese tastings and learn the secrets of making authentic Italian-style pasta on your village tours. Journey on to Amalfi Coast, exploring Capri, Sorrento, Positano, and Amalfi on day trips, and continue up the coast to see the volcanic ruins of Pompeii and soak in Neapolitan culture.

Tuscany

The birthplace of the Italian Renaissance, Tuscany has lots of local food specialties and gorgeous landscapes, which are best explored in small groups. Your tour will include Florence, Siena, and Cinque Terre, which you will explore by boat, train, and on foot. Discover delicious local treats, stroll through medieval alleys, join a Tuscan cooking class, sip on coffee, and bite into delectable cheeses.

Taormina

Taormina is a municipality on the slopes of Mount Etna on the east coast of Sicily. It has been a popular tourist destination since the 19th century, boasting a rich historical, artistic, and cultural heritage combined with beautiful natural scenery and a pleasant climate. A small group tour of Taormina can include a number of memorable experiences, including wine and food tastings, cooking classes, a journey up Mount Etna to learn about the area's agricultural history, and a traditional Sicilian lunch at a local farm.

Rome to Venice

An escorted tour of Rome to Venice can include a number of gems along the way, including Tuscany, Northern Italy (Piedmont, Lake Maggiore, Lake Como, and Trento), and Verona. You will be exploring stunning seaside villages, enjoying the region's food and wine culture, indulging in water sports, strolling through beautiful gardens, and more.

A Classic Tour of Rome

Rome, one of the world's most romantic cities, lends itself well to a small group tour. Join a private walking tour that takes you to the Sistine Chapel and Vatican Museums during quieter times, visit Trevi Fountain and Piazza Colonna, and explore the restricted underground dungeons of the Colosseum. You can extend your trip to Italy by combining this tour with other cities.

Italy is full of hidden culinary gems, but one place that really stands out is Trattoria di Via Serra in Bologna. It’s beloved by locals for its authentic Emilian dishes like handmade tortellini in brodo and rich tagliatelle al ragù

One unforgettable tradition travelers should try to experience is a sagra—a local food festival that celebrates a specific dish, ingredient, or harvest. These are often held in small towns, especially in the summer and fall, and they offer an amazing window into real Italian life

Most tourists don’t realize just how deeply regional Italy is. Not just in terms of food, but also in language, traditions, and identity. Italian culture is really a patchwork of local cultures

Our 2-week trip to Normandy, Switzerland and Italy after we disembarked from the Queen Mary 2 in Southampton in mid-May was superb. Michael Keon did an amazing job of putting together highlights for us to see and visit with the short time we had. All the train reservations, private and small group tours and transportations were very well coordinated, on time, and usually exceeded our expectations. Drivers were courteous and knowledgeable. Mike did a wonderful job getting everything coordinated, in spite of our almost “last minute” booking. I booked a month-long trip through GOWAY back in 1989 for Australia, New Zealand and Fiji, and they were superb then. So I tried them again, and found the entire organization to be even better. Mike was quick to respond to any questions that came up regarding booksings and times, regardless of the 6-hour time difference. Just superb! Although we had a nasty experience in Milan, GOWAY was very responsive and saw to our requests and our needs. Again, Michael Keon is the person who coordinated our travel. I will ask for Mike when I travel again with GOWAY. I recommend GOWAY highly. PJ Wheeler

Goway helped plan our two week trip to Peru and they (Virginia in particular) did a great job. The on-site logistics with Condor Travel went very smoothly, and the trip exceeded our expectations overall. They proactively suggested changes to our initial itinerary which were welcomed. I would recommend them and would work with them again in the future.Kate O'Neill

I recently went on an African Safari with my brother-in-law and sister and another couple who I knew. The entire experience was absolutely unbelievable. The complete details were flawlessly coordinated from the transfers to the breathtaking lodges. Our guides Peter showed us Kenya and Maulid Tanzania were very knowledgeable and very sharp eyes for finding the animals. We were able to see the animals up close, learn a lot about the people, birds , vegetation etc. We had several sundowners in the bush really added to a magical experience with beautiful sunsets. I would highly recommend Goway to all my friends, they will not be disappointed. Thank you to Bijal for the excellent African Safari that you put together for us. You were wonderful.Nancy Hay
