The Duomo of Milan, commonly called the Milan Cathedral, is Italy's largest cathedral and the seat of the archbishop of the city. The cathedral's construction began in 1386 and was completed over the course of 582 years. Its location was chosen to reflect its significance, which can be observed in the way the streets appear to encircle it as well as radiate outward from it. 

Under the front steps of the cathedral is the Milan Duomo archeological area, a complex of worship constructed between the 4th and 14th centuries. It houses the ruins of saints and an ancient episcopal complex. The interior of the Duomo is awe-inspiring, with stained-glass windows depicting stories of the Holy Scriptures and the city's history, including the Stained Glass of the Apocalypse and St. Michael with a spear overcoming the devil. The roof of the cathedral offers panoramic views of the city's iconic buildings and skyscrapers, as well as the Alps. You can ride an elevator to the top or walk up a total of 220 steps. Buy tickets ahead of time, especially during high season. If you visit in November, you can see the Quadroni of St. Charles, paintings depicting the miracles of St. Charles Borromeo, a leading figure of the Counter-Reformation.
