Big Ben

At 316 ft (96 m), London's iconic Elizabeth Tower (nicknamed Big Ben for the massive Great Bell) is the third-tallest free-standing clock tower in the world. Its Great Clock, with five bells, is world-famous for its precision (being accurate to within one second per day) and its size. The bell weighs just over 13 tons, and its clock face has a diameter of 23 ft (7 m).

The best way to see Big Ben is through a 90-minute guided tour that takes you up 334 stairs to the clock mechanism room and the Belfry. You can stand next to the massive bell as it strikes the hour. After a visit to Big Ben, you may want to explore the Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey, or the National Gallery, which are all located nearby. Big Ben draws large crowds. Early morning or late afternoon is a comparatively quieter time to visit the landmark. Visitors must be aged 11 or older.
