Overview

Take a trip to Zagreb on your Croatia Vacation

Zagreb is a distinctly Central European city located in the middle of the triangle of Vienna, Budapest and Venice. It has always been and remains a part of the cultural circle of central Europe. It has a tradition going back almost 1000 years and has managed to stay intact, offering visitors on a Croatia Vacation pleasant walks through its many parks and pedestrian-only areas. Zagreb's architecture, streets, the squares of Upper and Lower Town, open-air green markets, churches and monuments are all witnesses to a history that has successfully resisted time. The surrounding areas are particularly attractive with rich vineyards, Medieval and Baroque castles (the greatest concentration of castles after the Loire valley) and many health spas.

One of the most memorable traditions travellers should experience in Croatia is the Sinjska Alka. Held every August in the town of Sinj, near Split, it’s a centuries-old knights’ tournament where horsemen in traditional uniforms gallop at full speed trying to spear a small iron ring (“alka”) with their lances

One common misconception travellers have about Croatia is that it’s only about Dubrovnik and the Dalmatian coast. Inland regions like Zagreb, Istria, and Slavonia offer wine routes, truffle hunting, castles, and cultural festivals. Nature is also often overlooked. Beyond the famous Plitvice Lakes, there are mountains for hiking, rivers for rafting, and even thermal spas.

In early fall, the sea is still warm from the summer heat, making it perfect for swimming. Fall is also grape and truffle harvest season, which is ideal for food and wine lovers.

Areas of Zagreb

The Upper Town) and Lower Town is the cultural, religious, and commercial hub of Zagreb. These are where most of the restaurants, bars and tourist sights are located. The Upper Town, which is the medieval core of the city, developed as two separate towns, Kaptol, the seat of the Bishop where the imposing Cathedral now stands and Gradec where tradesmen and artisans worked. Old Town Gate is now a shrine to the Virgin Mary. The portrait of Mary is said to be sacred because it is the only thing that survived the great fire in Zagreb in 1731. Strossmayer's Walkway, in the summer, is an outdoor area for painters, musicians and other artists offering food, drinks, performances and concerts. It is a popular meeting place for all ages with a great view of the Lower Town.
