Overview

Take a trip to Dubrovnik on your Croatia Vacation

Dubrovnik, located in the extreme southern part of the country, is definitely the best-known destination when on a Croatia Vacation and for very good reasons. It is known as the “Pearl of the Adriatic” and is among the 10 best preserved medieval walled cities in the world with its spectacular churches, monasteries, museums and fountains. The old part of Dubrovnik, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is stunningly intact with a plethora of charming red-roofed buildings. Dubrovnik has been featured extensively as a site for the popular TV series, Game of Thrones.

The old part of Dubrovnik is surrounded by a high wall which surrounds the town. It is possible to walk completely around the top of the wall which is 2 kilometres/1 ¼ miles in length and takes an hour offering great views. Within the old town is a maze of tiny narrow atmospheric streets all pedestrianized.

One of the most memorable traditions travellers should experience in Croatia is the Sinjska Alka. Held every August in the town of Sinj, near Split, it’s a centuries-old knights’ tournament where horsemen in traditional uniforms gallop at full speed trying to spear a small iron ring (“alka”) with their lances

One common misconception travellers have about Croatia is that it’s only about Dubrovnik and the Dalmatian coast. Inland regions like Zagreb, Istria, and Slavonia offer wine routes, truffle hunting, castles, and cultural festivals. Nature is also often overlooked. Beyond the famous Plitvice Lakes, there are mountains for hiking, rivers for rafting, and even thermal spas.

In early fall, the sea is still warm from the summer heat, making it perfect for swimming. Fall is also grape and truffle harvest season, which is ideal for food and wine lovers.
