Atomium

The Atomium in Brussels is a unique atomic model structure designed by engineer André Waterkeyn and architects André and Jean Polak. It was constructed in 1958 for the World Exhibition held in Belgium's capital. Today, it remains a popular attraction, drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors annually to the Capital of the European Union. Originally conceived to inspire young people to pursue careers in technical and scientific fields, the Atomium housed scientific and medical displays within its spheres. Following its restoration in 2006, the exhibits expanded to include 1950s design. The Atomium now stands as a symbol of an era when atomic symbols influenced everyday designs.

Located a short distance north of the city centre, the Atomium is easily accessible by car or metro. Visitors can reach it by disembarking at Heysel Metro Station, a mere 1,640 ft (500 m) away, or by parking in one of the nearby car parks.
