Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula is the perfect place to combine a beach stay with cultural visits to the outstanding Mayan archaeological sites on a Mexico vacation. The peninsula is full of Maya archaeological sites, a few of which were built right on the coast. These include Chichen Itza, the largest and most restored site and also the most visited. It is a day trip from Cancun 160 kilometres/100 miles away. It is also an hour and a half away from Merida, the capital of Yucatan. Another important Mayan site is Uxmal, located 62 kilometres/40 miles south of Merida.

Yucatan also contains a number of top-class resorts the most popular beach resort being Cancun, Without a doubt, this part of Mexico boasts some of the most beautiful stretches of coastline you will ever see. I love learning about Nicaragua's culture and experiencing its Spanish influence in some cities. I was only there for five days, but I'll never forget how delicious the food was and how welcoming and extremely polite the people were.

Festival de Los Farolitos is an annual nighttime festival held every September in the town of Ataco, where the streets, houses, and plazas are illuminated with thousands of handmade lanterns (farolitos). Families craft them using colored paper, wood, calabash gourds, or jars, each with a candle inside. Although it's tied to the eve of the Virgin Mary’s birthday, it has evolved into a cultural celebration of community, light, creativity, and town pride.

Best Time to Visit

There is no bad time to visit. The weather on the coast tends to be warm to hot throughout the year allowing for good beach stays, although the best time is between October and May. There is very little rain between December and February and this is the mildest period. The busiest seasons are Christmas, Easter and the summer months when Mexican families like to travel and hotels are crowded. Generally, the beach resorts are less busy between December and May. However, these are the months when prices are at their peak.
