Overview

Take a trip to Guangzhou on your China Vacation

Guangzhou, previously known as Canton, is the capital of Guangdong Province and the 3rd largest city in China. Situated on the Pearl River, it is 175 kilometres/108 miles north of Hong Kong, convenient for a China vacation

The major event in this city of 14 million people is the Canton Trade Fair which takes place every April and November. Apart from this, there are many excellent attractions to make a visit enjoyable. The Canton tower, a multi-purpose observation edifice which is 600 metres/1970 feet in height, is a major landmark and is the 3rd highest tower and 5th tallest freestanding structure in the world. Its “twisted” shape makes it fascinating architecturally. The Chigang Pagoda situated on the river, built in 1619 and made of red sandstone was originally built to bring good luck to the city and surrounding area.

Shamian Island is a wonderful place to stroll around with its collection of gothic, baroque and neoclassical architecture. It has a historical significance. Yuexiu Park consists of 3 artificial lakes and 7 hills, hence the name in Cantonese. It combines ecology with cultural relics. Here you can see the Five Ram Statue, one of the most famous in Guangzhou and the emblem of the city. The park is people-oriented with swimming pools, restaurants and a botanical garden. It also houses the Guangzhou Museum which contains comprehensive exhibits depicting the city’s history plus the history of the Chinese Revolution and an Art Gallery which contains masterpieces of Chinese calligraphy, all to be enjoyed on China travel

Other landmarks are the the 130-year-old Sacred Heart Cathedral known as the Notre Dame of the East designed by French architects and the pagoda-like SunYat-sen Memorial Hall, a monument to the forerunner of the Chinese Revolution. Not far from the city is White Cloud Mountain, a beauty spot with parklands that include a sculpture park.

It is very enjoyable to travel in China by high-speed train, but you should avoid travelling during the National Holidays from October 1 to 7 and from May 1 to 4, as they get extra busy.

Jinxian Road in Shanghai is a small road but full of superb, Michelin-recognized restaurants. I highly recommend visiting here on your travels to China.

China's many beautiful natural sights and rich cultural areas are what I love most about visiting. Some of my personal favourites are Yunnan's Shangri-La, Xinjiang, Zhangjiajie, and the 5 Great Mountains.
