Overview
Take a trip to Entebbe on your Uganda Vacation
Entebbe is a major town in central Uganda located on the northern shores of Lake Victoria, Africa’s largest lake. Entebbe is home to Uganda’s State House as well as the official residence and office of the president.
In the local language, Entebbe means seat which refers to the fact that the region was once the place where a Baganda chief sat to preside over legal cases. Entebbe became a British colonial administrative and commercial centre beginning in 1893. From 1894 to 1962, the town served as the administrative capital of the British Uganda Protectorate.
The town became known internationally in 1976 with Operation Entebbe, one of the most daring counter-terrorism operations in history which witnessed a hostage rescue situation after an Arab-German hijacking of an Air France flight.
Today the United Nations uses Entebbe as a base for their vehicles and equipment that are used in peacekeeping missions in the central African region. Entebbe serves as an ideal stopover destination on travelling to Uganda as the town is made up of Old Entebbe and the suburb of Kitoro which hosts a variety of markets, bars and restaurants. There are options to take boat trips out on Lake Victoria where visitors can fish or travel to Ngambo Island to visit the chimpanzees found there. Entebbe is considered quite safe and hosts a variety of beautiful colonial gardens and parks to explore.

The staff at the lodges are all exceptional and really go out of their way to make your stay memorable. In one lodge, the wake up call included him singing "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" to me.
Gorilla trekking is such a unique experience - it can only be done in this part of the world. While the gorilla trekk is such a highlight, the surrounding areas are so beautiful it is worth considering spending more time in destination.
