Take a trip to Sossusvlei on your Namibia Vacation
Located in the southern part of the Namib Desert and part of Namibia’s Namib-Naukluft National Park is Sossusvlei, a salt and clay pan surrounded by world-famous red sand dunes. Traditionally, the name Sossusvlei only referred to the pan itself, however, nowadays it is used to describe the area of the great plain of the Tsauchab River and the red dunes that are north and south of the plain.
Sossusvlei is characterized by the high sand dunes that are among some of the highest in the world. Geologists consider the Namib Desert to be one of the oldest in the world, and many of the dunes found there have developed over a period of many millions of years. They receive their distinct red colouring from iron oxides in the sand coupled with particles of garnet. The shades vary depending on the age of the dunes with the oldest being the brightest. The largest dune has been nicknamed “Big Daddy” standing over 300 m tall.
On a Namibia vacation, Sossusvlei offers one of the most spectacularly unique sights in all of the country and is a popular tourist attraction. It has long been the source of inspiration for many photographers trying to get an iconic shot of the Namib Desert.

The local company handled the situation and there were minor issues after. I would recommend a local English-speaking guide every day. My clients loved the trip. The area we stayed in had many restaurants and local markets nearby. I recommend the cooking class, flamenco dance show, wine tasting and taps tour, and the city tour. Everything was wonderful. Everything went smoothly. The individual tours were wonderful and all the guides were exceptional. A lot of traveling-the flight was very good on Cathay Pacific would highly recommend their airline seats were comfortable and spaced well. Being on an airplane for 16 hours sucks in general, but other than being a little sore from being stuck in one place all was good.
