Best Time to Visit

Discover Vietnam's vibrant festivals, lush landscapes, and enticing adventures.

Vietnam is a year-round destination, but its experiences shift dramatically with the changing seasons. From the lush green rice terraces of the north during summer (May to August) to lantern-lit nights in Hoi An in the fall (September to November), every month offers something unique.

Whether you dream of cruising Halong Bay, trekking in Sapa, or soaking up the sun on Phu Quoc’s beaches, timing your trip right will make all the difference.

“Vietnam stretches over 2,000 kilometres from north to south,” says Destination Specialist Leo Liu, “so the weather can vary dramatically. March and April are ideal for visiting the whole country with moderate temperatures and light rain.”

Speak to one of our Destination Specialists for more information about when and where to go based on your interests.

Planning Travel Around Vietnam’s Seasons

During Vietnam’s spring (February to April), the country comes alive with blossoms and festivals. Hanoi and the north enjoy clear skies, while the central coast starts warming up, making it the ideal time for exploring ancient cities like Hue and Hoi An.

In the summer (May to August), vibrant rice fields dot the north, beaches come alive in the south, and lively festivals erupt around the country. While the central regions can be hot, this is prime time for getaways to islands such as Phu Quoc.

Fall’s harvest season (September to November) paints the countryside in golden hues. Cooler weather makes it perfect for trekking in Sapa or strolling the lantern-lit streets of Hoi An.

In winter (December and January), northern Vietnam cools down, creating crisp mornings in Hanoi, while the south stays sunny and warm—ideal for cultural excursions and coastal retreats.

“For many travelers,” says Destination Specialist Steve Hope, “Vietnam still conjures images of war. But that’s not the experience today. It’s full of warmth, beauty, and everyday life far removed from those past associations.”

The Best Times to Visit Vietnam According to Your Interests

Vietnam is a country of contrasts, and the best time to visit often depends on what you want to experience. For beach lovers, December to April brings warm, dry weather along the coast, perfect for unwinding on Danang’s soft sands, enjoying the calm turquoise waters of Phu Quoc, or exploring Nha Trang’s vibrant beach culture.

History and culture enthusiasts should consider February to April or September to November, when cooler temperatures and lighter crowds make it ideal for exploring the imperial city of Hue, Hanoi’s Old Quarter, and the lantern-lit magic of Hoi An. These months also coincide with cultural festivals, adding depth to your journey.

Foodies and marketgoers will love autumn’s harvest season, when fields turn golden and local markets brim with fresh produce. It’s the perfect time to taste regional specialties and immerse yourself in Vietnam’s dynamic culinary traditions.

No matter your focus, a well-planned itinerary ensures you experience Vietnam at its best. For more ideas on where to go, visit our guide to Vietnam destinations.

Regional Highlights to Plan Your Vietnam Trip Around

Vietnam’s regions each have their own rhythms, and timing your trip can make all the difference. Hanoi, with its leafy boulevards and urban lakes, is most enjoyable in spring (February to April) and autumn (September to November), when temperatures are mild and perfect for walking tours or street food adventures.

Ho Chi Minh City beckons year-round with its vibrant markets, historic French architecture, and rooftop bars. Springtime brings lively festivals, infusing the city with even more energy.

Halong Bay, one of Vietnam’s most iconic landscapes, is spectacular in the spring and fall, when skies are clear and seas are calm, ideal for overnight cruises among its towering limestone karsts.

From the cultural hubs in the north to the tropical beaches of the south, Vietnam rewards travelers who align their plans with the seasons. Explore the country’s highlights and hidden gems with our full guide to Vietnam destinations.

Let the Seasons Shape Your Vietnam Journey

The beauty of Vietnam lies in its diversity, and the best journeys follow the natural rhythms of the land. The dry season (December to April) is perfect for pairing a classic Halong Bay cruise with sunny coastal escapes in Phu Quoc or Nha Trang.

For adventure seekers, consider autumn (September to November) for trekking in Sapa’s terraced hills or cycling through the Mekong Delta as rice fields glow golden.

If you’re planning a culinary-focused trip, travel during harvest season to experience bustling markets and seasonal dishes at their freshest. And for those who love quiet moments and green landscapes, May and September offer a sweet spot with fewer crowds, softer prices, and lush scenery.

Whether you want history, beaches, food, or nature, timing your trip ensures a richer, more seamless experience. For insider advice on routes, weather, and cultural etiquette, check out our essential Vietnam travel tips.

Everything was expertly planned, from the drivers to the hotels to the tours to the flights. We particularly enjoyed Hobart and the animal sanctuary, Adelaide and the trip to Kangaroo Island, Melbourne and the evening tour with dinner and drinks, and Sydney with the private boat cruise of the Harbour. We will definitely use Goway again.SARA Wiebe

There were 4 travelers on this trip. All of us were in our late 70's. We started planning this trip 6 months prior to our travel date and had a lot of questions regarding this trip. Our Goway Travel Specialist, Karen Larrota, always answered our questions in a timely and complete manner. We traveled to Quito, Ecuador, the Galapagos, The Sacred Valley in Peru, Machu Picchu, and Cusco in Peru. Not only were the destinations and accommodations excellent, but every tour guide and driver were beyond excellent. The entire trip went smoothly every step of the way, which was amazing given the fact that there were numerous flights and hotels included in our package. We found out that the tour company that Goway used, Condor Travel, checked on us with our guide to make sure we were doing OK which we thought was very nice but also amusing as we are fairly fit older adults. Would also like to mention that we did a cruise thru the Galapagos on the Galapagos Legend which was arranged thru Go Galapagos - Kleintouurs. This portion of our tour was also excellent as were the wildlife guides and staff. We continue to discuss how wonderful this trip was with our family and friends and how wonderful this experience was. Would definately use Goway for our travel needs in the future.Dianne

My daughter and I had a wonderful 2 weeks in New Zealand! The country is so beautiful and the people so friendly. Our destination specialist did a great job with planning and organizing the itinerary, choosing our hotels, and organizing transportation. The hotels were absolutely beautiful and we had great views. We felt right at home and found all of the staff to be friendly and accommodating. There were no issues with our itinerary and our excursions we were always on the list. Our transportation was always ready and waiting for us. We want to thank Goway Travel for their hard work and patience with us in planning this trip. Any changes that needed to be made were communicated timely. We also want to thank you for the beautiful weather during the entire 2 weeks it was perfect every day 😀. It was a memorable trip that we will never forget and we will think of Goway when we plan our next adventure. Because it was not just a vacation; it was an adventure!Connie Wenhardt

My clients had a wonderful time on their trip to Easter Island. They were very pleased with the Hare Nua Hotel Boutique and especially noted the warmth and hospitality of the hotel staff as well as their excellent breakfasts. Jaime Vargas-Hendandez was an exceptionally gracious and knowledgeable agent, who went out of his way to ensure that my clients had the best possible experience. I will definitely contact him for future bookings and will recommend him to my colleagues.Alethea Kardas
