History

Danang first became a major port city in the 19th century, surpassing Hoi An for European trade. As the French continued to strengthen their stronghold on Vietnam, French Indochina was established, making Danang an important location. Danang later served as a major port city and air base for South Vietnam and US Armed Forces during the Vietnam War.

Ruled for centuries by the Champa Kingdom, the Hindu-practicing Cham civilization, Danang is an ancient city. The Cham Museum, located in the heart of Danang, features mostly sandstone sculptures of various Hindu icons. Featuring sensual artwork, these statues were brought from My Son, a cluster of abandoned and ruined Hindu temples, located approximately 69km southwest of Danang, and recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
