Insider Travel Tips

Portugal is one of Europe’s most welcoming destinations, blending old-world charm with modern conveniences. Its compact size, excellent infrastructure, and warm hospitality make it easy to explore, whether you’re navigating Lisbon’s cobbled streets or road-tripping through the Algarve. While the country is straightforward for most travellers, a few insider tips will help ensure your experience is smooth and stress-free.

“Portugal is one of Europe’s friendliest countries,” says Destination Specialist Josie Pileggi. “Everyone greets you with warmth, even if you don’t speak the language.”

Practical Information for Visiting Portugal

Visitors from Canada and the United States do not require a visa for stays under 90 days, making Portugal an accessible option for both short and extended vacations. The official currency is the euro, and while credit cards are widely accepted in cities and tourist hubs, carrying small amounts of cash is useful in rural areas and local markets.

Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory; leaving five to 10 percent in restaurants or rounding up the bill for excellent service is customary. Portugal is a very safe country, with low crime rates, though common-sense precautions apply, particularly in crowded areas of Lisbon and Porto.

Driving is a great way to explore beyond major cities. Portugal’s highways are in good condition, and EU licenses are accepted. Do note that many toll roads require electronic payment. Electrical current runs on 230V using Type C and F plugs, so pack an adapter if needed.

“Download an offline map app like Google Maps or Maps.me before exploring rural areas,” says Destination Specialist Josie Pileggi. “It’s a lifesaver.”

Health and Safety in Portugal

Tap water across Portugal is safe to drink, however on the Islands, bottle or filtered water is recommended for a nicer taste.Pharmacies are also widely available for everyday health needs. Portugal offers modern medical facilities and high-quality care in urban centres. The number to dial for emergencies is 112.

Socially, Portugal is known for its warmth and inclusivity. Major cities like Lisbon and Porto are LGBTQ+ friendly, and travellers of all backgrounds are welcomed with genuine hospitality. Rural areas tend to be more traditional, so modest dress is appreciated in churches and small villages.

Seasonal Advice for Portugal

When you visit Portugal shapes the kind of experience you’ll have. Summer (June to August) brings lively festivals, warm beach weather, and bustling streets, which is perfect for those who enjoy vibrant energy, but is also the busiest season, especially in the Algarve and Lisbon.

Spring and fall are ideal for cultural explorers, offering mild weather, blooming landscapes, and fewer crowds. The autumn harvest in the Douro Valley is a must-see for wine lovers, while winter invites peaceful escapes in Lisbon, Porto, Madeira and the Azores.

Planning ahead is essential for peak events such as the Santo António and São João festivals in June, or for seasonal wine tours. For more seasonal insights, check out when to go and tailor your itinerary around what matters most to you.

Top Destinations for First-Time Travellers to Portugal

Start in Lisbon, a city that balances historic charm with modern energy. Wander Alfama’s winding lanes, visit Belém Tower, and enjoy a night of soulful fado music. Porto offers a slower pace along the Douro River, where you can pair port wine tastings with riverfront strolls. For relaxation, the Algarve is an iconic choice, boasting golden beaches, dramatic cliffs, and hidden coves perfect for sunseekers and nature lovers.

Add a day trip to Sintra to see whimsical palaces like Pena Palace, surrounded by misty forests. If time allows, include Madeira, a subtropical paradise with lush gardens, scenic levada walks, and mild year-round weather.

Culture and Customs in Portugal

Portugal values courtesy and calmness in public spaces. When visiting churches or rural villages, modest dress is appreciated as a sign of respect for local mores. Greetings are warm but simple: handshakes in formal situations and cheek kisses among friends or acquaintances. A few polite words like “por favor” for please and “obrigado” or “obrigada” for thank you go a long way in making connections with locals.

Public behaviour tends to be quiet and respectful, particularly on public transportation and in religious settings. Travellers will find the culture welcoming, but showing sensitivity to local traditions enhances every interaction.

Food and Dining in Portugal

Portugal’s culinary scene is diverse, but seafood is central to many dishes, especially along the coast. If you have allergies, it’s important to communicate this clearly when dining. Vegetarian and gluten-free options are widely available in cities like Lisbon and Porto, with vegan and halal choices increasingly common in urban areas and tourist regions.

In rural destinations, menus lean toward traditional fare, so flexibility helps. Supermarkets often feature multilingual food labeling, making it easier to identify ingredients. Frequently Asked Questions

To plan a Portugal trip, start by deciding on your travel dates and the regions you wish to explore. Your travel agency can arrange the best accommodations, transportation, and guided tours to enhance your experience.

A typical 7 to 10-day Portugal vacation costs around US $1,500 to US $2,500 per person. This estimate is all inclusive of accommodations, meals, and ground transportation but does not cover international airfare. Prices vary based on travel style and season.

The best place to vacation in Portugal depends on your interests. Portugal vacation packages offer diverse options, from the vibrant city of Lisbon to the stunning beaches of The Algarve, and the historic charm of Porto. For wine lovers, Douro Valley is the spot.

When planning a trip to both Portugal and Spain, allocate enough time to experience both countries fully, typically at least two weeks. Start in major cities like Madrid or Lisbon and be sure to explore surrounding areas as well.

Portugal tours can vary from relaxing coastal retreats to exploring cultural sites in cities. Consider renting a car for flexibility or joining small group tours to maximize your experience.

Pack comfortable walking shoes, layers for variable weather, a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Include a mix of casual and smart-casual wear, as some restaurants, clubs, and Portugal tours have dress codes.

Tourists from most countries can stay in Portugal for up to 90 days within a 180-day period without a visa. However, you need to apply to the European Travel Information and Application System (EITAS) prior to visiting. For longer vacation packages you may be considering, a visa may be required.

Yes, Portugal is a safe and accepting country. Portugal is considered LGBTQ+ friendly, with a high equality index rating.

Tipping is customary but not mandatory in Portugal. Consider leaving a 5-10% tip in restaurants if the service was satisfactory, and a few euros for your hotel staff or travel guide

Portugal uses the Euro (EUR). Credit cards are widely accepted, though having some cash is useful for small transactions.

Yes, tap water is safe to drink in Portugal in most areas. However, some people prefer the taste of bottled water, which is also readily available.

The best time to visit Portugal is during the spring (March to May) or autumn (September to October) when the weather is pleasant, and the tourist crowds are smaller, compared to the peak summer months. These periods offer mild temperatures ideal for exploring cities and the countryside.

Portugal is rich in cultural experiences. Don't miss a live Fado music performance, an intangible cultural heritage found primarily in Lisbon and Porto. Experience the pilgrimages of the holy city of Fatima or head to the island of Madeira to take in the Madeira Flower Festival or see the fireworks on New Year's Eve. Also, consider visiting during the Festival of St. John (Festa de São João) in Porto in June for a vibrant celebration with fireworks, music, and dancing. Exploring the historic centres of cities like Évora and Sintra is also highly recommended.

I worked with Maria S. from Goway Travel to build a tailored trip to the Azores and mainland Portugal. Maria provided excellent, responsive and patient service, never pressured me into making decisions, offered multiple options for managing pricing, answered my many questions clearly and fully, and always met the timelines she would set to get back to me. Once I was on my trip, Maria checked in several times even though there was an operator on the ground at my destination; she even resolved a minor mix-up with one of my hotels and arranged for a special surprise on my birthday. I cannot speak highly enough of Maria's professionalism, follow-through, positivity, attention to detail and responsiveness. I highly recommend Goway and Maria for your travel plans, and will definitely use this company again for my future travels. Thank you so much for making my trip to Portugal so memorable, Maria! Extremely delighted we took this trip to Bali with Goway. Ameet was fantastic. He helped me save on my flights and also guided me on the right hotel decisions. Extremely Charming and always a pleasure to chat to. We enjoyed the Komodo islands a lot thanks to our specialist who made the recommendation. Hid guidance on the places and restaurants was spot on and we and my gf enjoyed the trip so much. We will consider using Goway and Ameet for our Honeymoon as well.Garth Cutos

We recently completed a trip to Crete, Greece - our third trip with GoWay - and I have run out of superlatives to laud their efforts. This was a self drive trip, and as has been our experience with GoWay, we were permitted to customize the standard offered itinerary to suit our personal preferences. Brooke, our agent on this trip, went the extra mile to make all the adjustments we requested, including providing for an English-speaking guide at the Phaistos archeological site. The hotels which Brooke booked on our behalf were truly excellent, and - again, per our wish - just outside of the urban chaos of Heraklion, Rethymno and Chania, but close enough to readily access the cities' benefits. Each hotel was a beachside sanctuary, and we spent several serene, idyllic days never leaving the hotel, and yet there was plenty of time for more distant and adventurous sight seeing. I cannot overstate how happy we have been with our GoWay experiences - most notably in their willingness to listen to our preferences and make those manifest in the itinerary - and this most recent trip just confirms our already positive opinion of GoWay, and we will be certain to consider them again for our next travel adventure.Frank Venuti

Venessa Lloyd at GoWay organized a trip to Africa for us- We just returned last week. It was very well organized and included everything we requested, and more. We did two safaris - one in Tanzania and one in South Africa. They were both excellent, with first class accommodations and guides. We absolutely would recommend GoWay and Vanessa to anyone. Sandra

Overall, the hotel and tours were amazing. We had issues with communicating with the driver. At times I was asked where, I was gone. The local company handled the situation and there were minor issues after. I would recommend a local English-speaking guide every day. My clients loved the trip. The area we stayed in had many restaurants and local markets nearby. I recommend the cooking class, flamenco dance show, wine tasting and taps tour, and the city tour. Jolynn Tizeno

Ani M was absolutely amazing to work with! I actually chose Goway for our group trip because of her recommendations. She was the only agent who took the time to explain that we really needed to split our travels into two separate trips if we wanted to experience everything on our wish list, and I really appreciated her honesty and guidance. Throughout the planning process, Ani was incredibly helpful and answered ALL of my questions, even when I asked the same ones more than once! She was patient, knowledgeable, and always willing to help. I enjoyed working with her and her team so much that I already have another group trip planned with her, and I expect we'll be planning another one soon! The guides during our Scotland trip were wonderful as well. Ian Short was the BEST! He was professional, knowledgeable, and made sure everything ran smoothly so we could simply enjoy the experience. He even worked in sightseeing stops we didn't know we needed to see, and those little extras made the trip even better. The entire experience was absolutely wonderful from beginning to end. I'm already looking forward to our next adventure to Ireland with Goway and working with Ani and their team again!Angela Butler
