TanzaniaBest Time to Visit

From the Great Migration to Kilimanjaro, Tanzania beckons year-round.

When is the ideal time to visit Tanzania?

Tanzania safaris, beach vacations, and Kilimanjaro climbs are all at their best during the long dry season, from July to September. This is also when the mighty herds of zebra and wildebeest cross the Mara River, making the Great Migration into Kenya. A Tanzania safari in the dry season means animals are easier to spot, as dryer conditions force them to congregate in greater numbers around vital water sources. A shorter dry season occurs during January and February, if you want to avoid the crowds of the peak season. As for the Great Migration, by this time, the herds have returned to the Serengeti in Tanzania and are calving, ready to begin the cycle anew.

When is Tanzania’s peak tourist season?

Many globetrotters who choose to embark on a Tanzania safari want to see the Great Migration, specifically the hazardous Mara River crossing. This takes place around late July into early September, and is usually the peak period for Tanzania safaris. The herds return to make the crossing again in late October, but most of the action then happens on the Kenyan side of the river, and usually coincides with the start of the rainy season.

Which is the most affordable time to visit Tanzania?

From March to May, Tanzania is in the depths of its long rainy season. Many hotels and lodges offer deep discounts to compensate, and parks are far less crowded. Some accommodations, particularly in the less popular southern and western parts of the country are closed altogether. Major parks like the Serengeti are still decent during this time if you don’t mind the rain, while the sheltered Ngorongoro Crater is rich with wildlife at any time of year.

How long should I plan to visit Tanzania?

A week to 10 days is normally enough to see the highlights of Tanzania, including the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater. Two weeks will give you time to explore some lesser-known regions and national parks, and perhaps visit Zanzibar. Kilimanjaro treks take about a week. Avoid Kilimanjaro climbs that try to summit too quickly. A weeklong trek gives you time to adjust to changes in altitude.
