Overview

Take a trip to Tarangire National Park on your Tanzania Vacation

Located in the northwestern corner of Tanzania’s Maasai Steppe is Tarangire National Park, named for the Tarangire River that crosses through the park. During the dry season on a Tanzania safari, the river is often the only source of water for wild animals.

Designated as a national park in 1970, Tarangire covers an area of 2,850 square kilometres (1,100 square miles). Acacia woodland, baobab and palm trees, plains, swamps and rivers make up the landscape of the park. Being one of Tanzania’s lesser-known national parks, it has the feel of an undiscovered Africa on a Tanzania safari.

During the rainy season, animals such as wildebeest, Thomson’s gazelles, zebra and elephants are widely dispersed throughout the park. However, once the dry season commences in July, these animals make their way to the river where they remain until October. While the river significantly reduces in size over the months of July to October, it always provides some water and respite for those animals that stay along its banks.

Famous for its tree-climbing pythons, Tarangire National Park is also known as a popular spot for birdwatchers on a Tanzania vacation. More than 550 species have been recorded in the park and the swamps host the largest selection of breeding birds in the world. Walking safaris are one of the best ways to experience Tarangire as they allow visitors to get close to the wildlife without disrupting it.
