Insider Travel Tips

Wildlife spectacles, rich culture, and genuine hospitality make Tanzania one of Africa’s most rewarding destinations. From tracking elephants across the Serengeti to sharing chai in a local village, every experience feels both immersive and meaningful. A little local insight goes a long way in ensuring a seamless and unforgettable journey.

Start planning your tailor-made Tanzania vacation by speaking with one of our Destination Specialists now.

Practical Information for Visiting Tanzania

Tanzania requires a visa for many nationalities, including travellers from Canada, the United States, Australia, and most of Europe. Applying online for an eVisa in advance is recommended to streamline arrival.

Cash is preferred in rural areas, while credit cards are accepted in cities, hotels, and larger lodges. ATMs are available in Arusha, Dar es Salaam, and Zanzibar, but travellers should carry Tanzanian shillings when visiting remote regions.

While tap water is generally safe in major hotels and lodges, bottled or filtered water is recommended elsewhere. Most safari camps provide safe drinking water throughout your stay.

Safety and Etiquette in Tanzania

Tanzania is widely regarded as a safe and welcoming destination, particularly when travelling with experienced guides. As with any destination, basic precautions such as securing valuables and staying aware in busy areas are advised.

Respect for local customs is important. Dress modestly in villages and religious sites, and always ask permission before photographing people. Following your guide’s lead ensures respectful and meaningful cultural interactions.

Culture and Customs in Tanzania

Tanzanians are known for their warmth and strong sense of community. Greetings are an essential part of daily life, often beginning with a friendly exchange - you may hear “jambo” (hello), though locals commonly use other Swahili greetings in everyday conversation.

Hospitality is deeply ingrained, and visitors are often treated as honoured guests. Meals are shared generously, and interactions tend to be unhurried, reflecting a relaxed and welcoming pace of life.

Seasonal Advice for Tanzania

Tanzania offers exceptional travel experiences year-round, though timing can shape your itinerary.

The dry season (June to October) is ideal for wildlife viewing, particularly in the Serengeti during the Great Migration. Shoulder seasons such as late May and November offer fewer crowds, lush landscapes, and strong value.

Zanzibar is best enjoyed from December to March, while the green season (March to May) brings dramatic scenery and quieter parks, though some remote areas may be less accessible.

Must-Sees for First-Time Travellers to Tanzania

First-time visitors typically explore Tanzania’s northern safari circuit. The Serengeti is famed for its vast plains and big-cat sightings, while the Ngorongoro Crater offers a truly unique safari experience within a vast, wildlife-rich volcanic caldera, often described as one of Africa’s most remarkable natural wonders.

For contrast, Zanzibar provides a relaxing coastal escape with white-sand beaches and Swahili culture. Adventurous travellers may also consider climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak.

This combination of safari, coast, and mountain ensures a dynamic, once-in-a-lifetime journey. To make the most of these incredible regions, start planning your tailor-made Tanzania vacation with Goway today.

Food and Dining in Tanzania

Tanzanian cuisine highlights fresh, local ingredients and regional influences. Common dishes include ugali, grilled meats, vegetables, and coconut-based curries, with most lodges accommodating dietary requirements.

Dining is typically communal and relaxed, with meals shared and enjoyed at a slower pace. Tipping is customary, particularly for guides and lodge staff.

We are still on our journey in Italy. At Capri now and heading to the Amalfi Coast. So far, we can’t thank Goway enough for putting our itinerary together so quickly. Everything is going well and hope the next 10 days are perfect too. Gladys Vivian

Can't say enough good things about Goway Travel. From the very start, our travel rep, Harpreet, listened carefully to what we were hoping to see and do on our first trip to Japan. She asked great questions and then came back to us with a detailed itinerary packed with adventure and fun, and all within our travel budget. From the moment we took off from LAX, Harpreet had made sure we had every tour voucher, hotel voucher, plane ticket, train ticket, literally every detail covered. All we had to do was follow our itinerary. Also, Harpreet booked us into terrific hotels. Each one was spotlessly clean, comfortable, included a full (and delicious) breakfast and, most importantly, was centrally located to all of the activities she had planned for us. So everything was a 5 or 10-minute walk away. In three weeks' time we were able to visit six cities and so many fascinating shrines, temples, castles, imperial palaces - most of which were World Heritage sites. Harpreet also tucked in fabulous "experiences" like learning how to make sushi with a professional chef, enjoying a tea ceremony and watching graceful Geishas dance. My husband and I are seasoned travelers. But we don't speak Japanese and we really knew very little about the country. There is no way we would have been able to see and do all of the fascinating things we did in Japan if we hadn't chosen Goway Travel to be our guide. Many thanks for an unforgettable trip! Great country (Italy), great people and love the feel you get by just being you. Ingrid Aird did a great job with a pair of tours one private and one group. Organizing pickup from airport and flights. Hotel, Enterprise Hotel, after a bit of a rough start getting us into a proper room, was more than excellent.Thomas Helps

We were looking forward to a magical vacation in Greece, and Goway Travel delivered on all fronts. This is the second time that we have booked with them (the first being an incredible excursion in Thailand), and everything went along swimmingly. Only on one occasion did a tour go sideways, but our Goway specialist (Patrick) took care of it for us. When your tour involves many flights, numerous hotels, various tours, ferries, and transfers, it is nice to know that your travel specialist can handle it all. Goway (from Patrick to all the other staff involved) handled everything in such a professional manner. Thanks Goway for such an incredible experience in Greece. I look forward to another adventure in the near future!Jenny Friess

While researching suppliers for a clients Thailand honeymoon, I remembered being referred to GoWay by a longterm TA ….because they “get it right and get it done!” I had already started their training modules, so I put in a quote. Immediately, Taylor responded with a very thorough email and we decided to chat. I gave him my specifics and he again responded immediately and matched my client’s travel needs 100%. I found it comforting to speak with a country expert with the knowledge I needed. My clients booked their vacation and are very excited about their itinerary! Thank you Taylor for making this process seamless.Karla B
