TongaFood and Drink

Discover Tonga's flavors in delightful dishes and unique drinks.

Tonga's got some tasty traditional dishes that people still love, like ‘Ota Ika, a raw fish dish with coconut cream and citrusy goodness, and Lu Pulu, corned beef wrapped in taro leaves. There's also Kapisi Pulu, a similar deal but with cabbage. Don't forget Feke, octopus in coconut sauce, Faikakai Topai dumplings in coconut syrup, and Keki, Tongan doughnuts.

Now, let's talk drinks. Kava, made from pepper plant roots, is a local favourite. You can give it a shot at resorts. ‘Otai is another option, a fruity drink with watermelon and mango. If you're into artisan beverages, Tonga's got coffee like Tupu’Anga Coffee and Kingdom Koffie, plus craft beers from Pacific Brewing Co and Tonga Breweries in bars and liquor stores.

Tipping isn't expected, but it is definitely appreciated for good service. And the drinking age is 18. Keep in mind, thanks to the strict Sabbath rules, no alcohol sales are allowed from midnight Saturday to midnight Sunday.
