Best Time to Visit

Choose the ideal time to explore Greenland’s vast frozen landscapes, striking fjords, frozen mountains, and breathtaking coastline.

Timing and price are two of the most significant elements of planning the perfect trip to Greenland. You’ll discover plenty of incredible experiences across the world’s largest island, though Greenland’s extreme weather, rugged landscapes, and unique seasons make preparation key. Planning your trip with our expert Destination Specialists ensures you’ll embark on your dream Greenland vacation at the right time and at the right price.

When is the ideal time to visit Greenland?

Choosing the ideal time to visit Greenland depends on your travel style and preferred experiences. Summer (from June to August) and winter (from December to April) are the two most popular seasons to visit Greenland with contrasting appeal. Summer is full of long, warm, bright days where hiking, sailing, and other outdoor activities are most comfortable. Winter, on the other hand, showcases Greenland’s frozen appeal, with incredible dog sledding and Northern Lights experiences in abundance.

Spring (from March to May) and autumn (from September to October) are the shoulder seasons for travelling to Greenland. However, both seasons still offer incredible value. Spring is an intense season of changes; when the snow melts, the days get longer, and the nights get brighter. Autumn is equally intense but often shorter, with the beautiful autumn colours only out briefly before winter sets. Crowds during both of these seasons are typically much smaller, making them great times to visit Greenland.

When is Greenland’s peak tourist season?

Greenland’s peak tourist season runs from June to September. Summer offers milder temperatures, long daylight hours, sailing opportunities among icebergs, hiking, and cultural festivals across the country.

When is the most affordable time to visit Greenland?

The most affordable time to visit is during the shoulder seasons of late spring (April to May) and early autumn (September to October). Winter (November to March) can also offer lower prices, though travel can be more challenging due to the weather.

How long should I plan a visit to Greenland?

Plan for at least 7 to 10 days to experience a few different regions, like Ilulissat's Icefjord, Nuuk's urban culture, and southern Greenland's Norse ruins. A 5-day trip can still offer meaningful exploration if you're focusing on one area. A minimum of three weeks is recommended for trips designed to see the entire country due to weather and transport limitations.
