Overview

Take a trip to San Pedro Sula on your Honduras Vacation

Located in the Valle de Sula in the northwest corner of Honduras, San Pedro Sula is a major transportation hub on a Honduras vacation and is considered the industrial capital of the country.

San Pedro Sula was founded by Pedro de Alvarado in June 1536 and became an important commercial centre. Many goods like cocoa and leather passed through the city before being sent on to Spain. This wealth attracted pirates and as a result, San Pedro Sula was looted many times before being sacked and burned down in the 17th century. This caused the residents to move to an indigenous village called Azula which became the site that the city still occupies to this day. San Pedro Sula was officially designated as a city in 1902 and during the 20th century, many factories decided to make the city their headquarters and with that came a significant growth in population.

Today San Pedro Sula is the second largest city in Honduras and with an international airport, it serves as a major gateway not only to the northern and western parts of Honduras but to the country as a whole. A modern city and the country’s industrial and financial centre, it hosts foreign consulates as well as many restaurants and shopping centres including some excellent markets, all to be enjoyed on a Honduras vacation.

I love learning about Nicaragua's culture and experiencing its Spanish influence in some cities. I was only there for five days, but I'll never forget how delicious the food was and how welcoming and extremely polite the people were.

The Day of the Dead in Guatemala is a great local tradition where people gather to fly giant, intricately decorated kites to honour the dead.

The colourful Spanish architecture, the beautiful scenery, particularly the stunning lakes, and the Mayan ruins are what I love most about Guatemala!
