Culture & Traditions

Experience the cultural mosaic of the diverse United States.

The culture of the United States is as diverse as its people, offering a rich tapestry of influences from around the globe. Each region boasts its own distinct identity, from the jazz-filled streets of New Orleans to the tech-driven energy of Silicon Valley, and from the political heart of Washington, D.C., to the cowboy culture of the Midwest.

American society is built on principles of freedom, individualism, and innovation—values that have shaped its global influence in music, art, politics, and technology. The country’s history, including movements like the American Revolution and the civil rights era, has fostered a dynamic blend of traditional and countercultural narratives. Visitors can experience this diversity firsthand through regional foods, festivals, and local traditions, whether they’re indulging in Southern comfort food, attending a Broadway show, or exploring the scenic beauty of its national parks. America's culture invites exploration, offering something for everyone—from art enthusiasts to sports lovers and everything in between.

What is visiting etiquette in the United States?

In the U.S., casual friendliness and politeness go a long way. Greeting with a handshake or a smile is common, and making small talk with strangers, especially in social or service settings, is normal. Tipping is expected at restaurants, taxis, and for service staff, with 15-20% being the standard. Public drinking is generally discouraged, with alcohol laws varying by state, so be mindful of where you consume alcohol. Americans value personal space, so avoid standing too close in conversation. Additionally, open criticism of local customs or politics, especially with people you’ve just met, can be seen as rude. The country is fairly informal, so don't worry too much about rigid social rules—just be polite and open.

What is the United States best known for culturally?

The U.S. is best known for its cultural diversity, reflected in its music, film, and food. From Hollywood's global influence on film to the country’s contributions to jazz, rock, and hip-hop, American pop culture has shaped the world. Socially, meals are often a time for bonding, with gatherings centred around food, especially during holidays like Thanksgiving. The U.S. also has a strong sports culture, with baseball, football, and basketball serving as popular pastimes. Americans tend to embrace a casual, friendly atmosphere in social settings, and it's common to find community in places like coffee shops, sports bars, or local gatherings.

What are some United States traditions?

American traditions vary widely, but key national holidays include Thanksgiving, celebrated with family gatherings and feasts, and the Fourth of July, which marks the country’s independence with fireworks, barbecues, and patriotic displays. Other traditions are tied to regional cultures, such as Mardi Gras in New Orleans or rodeos in the Midwest and Southwest. Religious traditions are also prevalent, with Christmas and Easter being widely observed. Additionally, sporting events, particularly the Super Bowl, are major cultural moments in the U.S., bringing people together to watch, eat, and celebrate.

What are American people like socially?

Americans are generally friendly and open, with a tendency to engage in small talk, even with strangers. Social interactions are often casual, and smiling at people in public is common. Americans are known for being direct but polite, with less emphasis on formality compared to other cultures. Sports play a big role in social life, with events like football games being popular gatherings. Additionally, the U.S. is increasingly welcoming to people of different backgrounds, including the LGBTQ+ community and people of colour, though attitudes can vary by region. Visitors will find that Americans are expressive in conversation, often using gestures, and are more likely to hug than bow when greeting someone they know well.

Our trip to Japan was great. All our Goway arrangements preformed like clockwork and the guides for the tours were wonderful. Unfortunately, Mt. Fuji was in total fog but at least the lunch was very good and so was the drum solo, also our tour guide kept our spirits up ( she was the best). Taryn picked hotels that were very convenient to the meeting point of our tours which was much appreciated and organized all aspects of our trip perfectly. So from our airport pickup to our last day in Tokyo everything ran very smoothly so we have used Goway before and will certainly use it again and reccommend Goway to others.JW

We have used Goway Travel for previous trips and have been very happy with their excellent service. Our last trip to New Zealand and Australia was no exception. Our agent, Lori Mazzono, got tuned into the sort of trip we were hoping to have immediately. The various booking she provided were, without exception, exceptional and exactly what we envisioned, We really don't think we would have changed anything. tBruce Belshaw

Mary was absolutely fantastic to work with. She was incredibly responsive and quick to assist with every update and change my clients made throughout the planning process. Her expertise was invaluable, from recommending the perfect resorts to advising on the best way to travel between the islands. My clients loved every moment of their trip, especially their resort stays and overwater bungalow experiences. As this was their honeymoon, creating a seamless and memorable journey was so important, and Mary exceeded expectations. They rated their experience a 5 out of 5 and could not have been happier. Thank you, Mary, for your outstanding support and attention to detail. I truly appreciated your partnership and would not hesitate to work with you again for future South Pacific Island bookings. Elisa planned our trip. We were met at the airport by Paul who drove us to Arusha. Adam, our guide and driver was with us the whole trip and was very knowledgeable about the country and the animals & birds we encountered. Accommodations were excellent, meals were delicious and the Tanzanian people we met at each location were so kind and welcoming. A wonderful trip.pat vickers

We had a wonderful trip to Peru for 11 days organized by Goway. Overall the trip was great, we loved our guides throughout, some of the hotels were truly amazing and it was helpful having everything organized and having a point person to ask questions and check in while we were there. Some main highlights were: 1) Machu Picchu- I am so glad we did two tours, because the weather was perfect for views, but also had an opportunity to see Machu Picchu more in depth with a knowledgeable and friendly guide and had a little extra time in Aguas Calientes to shop, explore and even visit the butterfly garden and do some birdwatching. 2) Cusco especially the Hotel Aranwa Cusco. The hotel was incredible, excellent service, modern updates, it was a true highlight of the trip. Cusco itself was also a highlight, loved our half day tour, plus getting ideas for our guide on what else to see in our free time and where to eat. 3) Lima- Aloft Miraflores was another highlight, very modern, nice pool and the best breakfast out of the hotels we stayed in. The location in Miraflores was also perfect, as there were plenty of restaurants, cafes and attractions nearby. 4) Everyone at Condor was great, from ensuring we had all our documents, tickets and itinerary to even stepping in to get water and agua Florida when we were feeling the altitude sickness the first hours in Cusco. Most of our rides and transfers were very comfortable and made the trip run smooth through all the different locations. I have been telling my friends and family how wonderful the experience with Goway has been for our Peru adventure. Eric Paul Schatzel
