Insider Travel Tips

From timeless ruins to beach bars buzzing late into the night, Greece blends ancient charm with modern hospitality like very few other countries. To make your journey a seamless one, talk to one of our Destination Specialists today for insider planning advice.

Practical Information for Visiting Greece

Starting in 2026, U.S. and Canadian citizens traveling to Greece must obtain an ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) authorization before departure. It is recommended to apply in advance to avoid delays

In smaller towns and islands, cash is often preferred, especially for taxis, tips, and small purchases, while credit cards are widely accepted in major cities.

In terms of tap water safety, it’s fine to drink in Athens and other mainland hubs, but stick to bottled water on many of the islands.

Safety and Respect in Greece

Known for its warm hospitality and low crime rates, Greece is one of the safest and most welcoming destinations in Europe. Visitors are generally treated with kindness and curiosity.

When visiting churches or monasteries, modest clothing is appreciated. Bring a shawl or wear longer sleeves to respect local customs.

Culture and Etiquette in Greece

Greeks are famously expressive and generous, often greeting you with a smile and eager conversation. Don’t be surprised if a simple question turns into a heartfelt exchange. Filoxenia, the tradition of welcoming strangers, is very much alive. Embrace it and you’ll find your trip enriched by unexpected connections.

These social moments offer a glimpse into Greek culture and customs, where warmth and openness are a way of life.

Seasonal Advice for Greece

Each season in Greece comes with its own rhythm: Spring is ideal for flowers, foliage, and cooler temperatures, while summer buzzes with beach life and festivals. Fall offers harvest flavours and golden light, and winter is quiet and perfect for cultural touring.

To get the most out of your journey, consider aligning your travel dates with Greece’s seasonal highlights, from local festivals to regional events, for a deeper, more immersive experience.

Must-Sees for First-Time Travellers to Greece

If it’s your first time in Greece, start with a mix of city, coast, and countryside. Athens is a must for its ancient landmarks and lively streets, while the island of Santorini delivers dramatic views and romance. Crete offers history, beaches, and hearty cuisine, and Meteora’s cliffside monasteries leave a lasting impression.

“If you want iconic views but fewer crowds,” says Destination Specialist Melissa Moses, “go to Naxos or Paros. They’re beautiful, relaxed, and still full of local life.”

Food and Dining in Greece

Greek cuisine is full of fresh, plant-based options thanks to its Mediterranean roots, making it naturally accommodating for vegetarians.

Meals are often enjoyed late in the evening, especially in summer, and dining is a leisurely, social experience. When invited to someone’s home, expect warm hospitality and generous portions.

It’s common to share dishes and linger over a meal with good company in Greece. Learn more about Greek food and drink and how it shapes everyday life.

Carry some euros in cash, especially in villages or for small purchases. Wear sturdy shoes for cobbled streets, and pack light layers; even in summer, nights can be cool.

Ferries and domestic flights make island-hopping easy. In the off season, however ferries between the islands are subject to weather and sea conditions so plan accordingly. On the mainland, private transfers or guided tours help you access historic sites and hidden villages with ease.

As a travel agent, it was very easy to work with Goway. They were very responsive, especially Osvaldo Gonzalez, even when the client wanted to make in-destination changes a day or two prior. My clients absolutely enjoyed everything about their trip to Costa Rica - they specifically mentioned that all the drivers and guides they had were excellent, friendly, and knowledgeable. I would not hesitate to use Goway again for a custom trip to Costa Rica. Shawna Woods Roy

We, three couples, all enjoyed our time in Peru, despite the small amount of time we had, and the fact one person had injury while on the cruise prior to arriving in Lima. We did want to experience Machu Picchu without spending as many days as others usually do, since we had been traveling prior to that already. Kajal at Goway was able to tailor a well packed three-day private tour for our small group of six. Every detail, from the moment we got off the cruise ship, to Cusco, to Machu Picchu, and back to Lima airport hotel, was well taken care of. Kajal was very efficient in helping with the requested itinerary, and in staying on desired budget, as well answered all questions in timely fashion. We were able to accomplish what we were not sure if possible, all thanks to Kajal at Goway. Our experience in Peru was very positive. We felt the tours organized by Goway had enabled us to have great and impressive exposure to Peruvian culture and important historical sights - all 31 hours in 3 days!!! Condor Travel in Peru took care of us every step of the way. Every person we came across was very courteous, willing, and helpful. Help was always there and questions answered quickly via Whatsapp. All in all a great and positive experience we would highly recommend.KM

I want to personally thank my Travel Agent Alice Teramoto who organized two spectacular trips for me! One to Australia and most recently Vietnam and Cambodia. She nailed it! I can’t express my gratitude enough! Both trips were flawless and hassle free! Every experience exceeded my expectations! I spent my 60th Birthday in Vietnam on the Lunar New Year which was a complete thrill! I highly recommend Alice and will definitely book with her again soon! Thanks so much Alice ♥️👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻Avril

Mary G. was an absolute pleasure to work with. I partner with Goway often for Europe and typically have my go to rep, so stepping outside of that for a New Zealand itinerary had me a little unsure at first. That hesitation quickly disappeared. Mary stepped in with confidence, handled all of my moving pieces with ease, and truly understood the level of detail I needed to take care of my clients. She delivered a beautifully curated itinerary that exceeded expectations, and most importantly, my clients had an incredible experience in New Zealand. I’m so grateful to have her as a resource and look forward to working together again.Nichole Pierce

Joanna was amazing!!! She was able to set up a ten day trip for me in Sydney in a matter of a couple of weeks. All accommodation and tours were amazing and the 24 hour help center was great and where able to call up the tour company and have them come and still pick be up when I had a mixup with the reservation. Would definitely recommend Goway to any friends and family and will definitely be using them again.Erica Wolff

I cannot sing Erin’s praises enough! She planned an action-packed two-week New Zealand itinerary that hit every single stop on our bucket list. Every experience was truly first-class and luxurious. While I found myself being price-conscious initially, once I saw the incredible quality of the experiences she curated, I knew it was going to be the trip of a lifetime. A huge thank you to Erin and Go Way Travel for making my 50th birthday so epic. We’ll definitely be reaching out for our next big adventure!Michelle

I booked this trip to Adelaide with Goway, after using them before when we explored the 'big' sites of Australia. This time, we went to Adelaide to go to three of the top wine growing areas for wine tastings. We were a small group of 4 people. It was made better as the vendor used Small Batch Wine Tours for all of our excursions. They were fantastic making us the only travelers on these tours. Matthew, the owner, even adjusted our wineries on the last day to go to different place. This place totally marked off everything we were looking for in wine. Ended up buying a couple of bottles. Between Goway setting it up and Small Batch Wine Tours running the actual tours we had a beautiful and seamless trip. not applicable
