Culture & Traditions

Immerse yourself in Belize's vibrant, multicultural heritage and spirit.

Belize is a captivating mosaic of cultural influences, seamlessly blending Mayan, African, Garifuna, Mestizo, and European elements into a rich cultural tapestry. As the only English-speaking country in Central America, Belize's linguistic diversity includes Spanish, Kriol, and several Mayan languages, highlighting its multicultural lineage. The Garifuna, with their African and Indigenous Caribbean heritage, enrich Belizean culture through spirited music and the punta dance, a vibrant symbol of their traditions.

Meanwhile, the Maya contribute ancient practices and art that continue to influence Belize today. Local artists vividly capture the essence of Belize’s lush landscapes and historical narratives, contributing to a dynamic art scene. Celebrations such as the San Pedro Lobster Festival and Garifuna Settlement Day showcase the joyous communal spirit and diverse cultural heritage that make Belize truly distinctive.

What is the visiting etiquette in Belize?

In Belize, casual and friendly interactions are common, but respect for local customs is essential. Greetings are typically warm and often involve a handshake or a nod. It's polite to wait to be invited before using first names. Dining etiquette is informal; however, being punctual for meals is appreciated. Public drinking is acceptable in social settings but should be done responsibly.

What is Belize best known for?

Belize is renowned for its stunning natural beauty, including the Belize Barrier Reef and its lush rainforests. Culturally, it is known for the vibrant Garifuna Settlement Day and the lively Belize Carnival, which celebrate its diverse ethnic heritage. Additionally, its archaeological sites like Caracol and Xunantunich reflect its rich Mayan history.

What are some Belize traditions?

The predominant religion in Belize is Christianity, with a significant portion of the population adhering to Roman Catholicism and Protestantism. Annual celebrations include Garifuna Settlement Day, which commemorates the arrival of the Garifuna people with parades and music, and the San Pedro Lobster Festival, celebrating the start of the lobster season with feasts and dances.

What are people like from Belize socially?

Belizeans are generally open, friendly, and hospitable. Social interactions are characterised by a relaxed and informal tone. Smiling and small talk are common, and while Belizeans are approachable and often quite expressive in conversation, they also respect personal space. Sporting events, especially football and basketball, are popular and serve as social gatherings.

What languages do people from Belize speak?

English is the official language of Belize, making it easy for English-speaking tourists to communicate. Spanish, Belizean Creole (Kriol), and several Mayan languages are also widely spoken. Efforts by tourists to learn and use basic phrases in Kriol or Spanish are usually met with appreciation and can enhance interactions with locals.

We recently traveled to Portugal and had the most wonderful experience. As our first venture overseas, we decided to search online for travel assistance. We happened across Goway Travel and are so glad we did! Michael Keon, our Destination Specialist, is extremely proficient and knowledgeable in his profession. "Thorough" is an understatement. He assisted every step of the way from the moment we stepped on our flights, transfer arrangements, hotel accommodations, train travel and multiple tours/outings tailored to our specific needs/wish list. He provided unparalleled guidance and support during the planning process and was always available to discuss any questions/concerns. His communications were always prompt and concise. Without a doubt, our best trip to date...there will be no hesitation to contact Mr. Keon for future travels. Joanna Lynn Mays Michael Andrew Mays Joanna Mays

What made this experience great was Cedric Wai. Had a client going to Asia and this is Cedric's wheelhouse since he is from there. Everything was wonderful. Everything went smoothly. The individual tours were wonderful and all the guides were exceptional. A lot of traveling-the flight was very good on Cathay Pacific would highly recommend their airline seats were comfortable and spaced well. Being on an airplane for 16 hours sucks in general, but other than being a little sore from being stuck in one place all was good. Thank you so much for all your help and the trip was wonderful and everything that it should be! Next trip will be much more relaxing, sitting still for a while on a beach somewhere ha ha!Careen Sullivan

My destination specialist, Katie Stephenson was amazing from the onset. Her customer service, communication style and planning skills was so timely and top notch. Our trip was to Fiji, New Zealand and Australia, from Aug 4-22, 2026. The way she planned and booked the trip makes the experience convenient and enjoyable. The flexibility of payment makes the decision faster and attractive. Everything we need to know including contacts were readily available within our travel documents itinerary. Overall, I'll say it's money well spent and a lifetime experience particularly for my kids.Festus

We went on a highly customized comprehensive (though quick tour) of England and a bit of Scotland through Goway. Ingrid Aird did an amazing job of planning and arranging every detail with her deep experience, insight, thoughtfulness and creativity, tuning into the needs of each traveler; and she did so even though our decision to travel was rather spontaneous and last minute! Our family had the best time! We look forward to working with Ingrid and Goway again!Vilja Breiling
