Take a Trip to Uluru on your Australia Vacation
Uluru, formerly known as Ayers Rock, is a large sandstone formation in Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. Towering 1,000 ft (304 m), the natural wonder is estimated to be around 600 million years old and holds spiritual significance for the Aboriginal people of the area known as the Anangu.
Climbing Uluru is prohibited, but you can walk around its base. The rock changes colour at different times of the day, from red to orange to purple and back again. Sunrise and sunset views are best as the rocks take on a violet/blue tinge. The walk will be a 6-mi (9.6 km) trip, so wear sturdy walking shoes and carry a bottle of water. You can also get a view of Uluru on a helicopter ride. Other activities include an outback adventure on a camel ride, a visit to Uluru-Kata Tjuta Cultural Centre, and an outdoor dining experience under the stars. Uluru is conveniently accessible by air via direct flights from major Australian airports.
