15 Ways to Explore Sydney, Australia

Long considered one of the world’s most beautiful and liveable cities, Sydney effortlessly and consistently draws all types of travellers, from first-timers to experienced globetrotters. It is the must-see city for any traveller to Australia, for good reason: Sydney has one of the most recognizable skylines in the world, filled with iconic buildings, small galleries showcasing inspired Australian talent, a thriving music scene, some of the world’s finest restaurants alongside local eateries embodying the cities multi-ethnic gastronomic roots – and we haven’t even mentioned the weather, beaches, architecture or wine!, for good reason: Sydney has one of the most recognizable skylines in the world, filled with iconic buildings, small galleries showcasing inspired Australian talent, a thriving music scene, some of the world’s finest restaurants alongside local eateries embodying the cities multi-ethnic gastronomic roots – and we haven’t even mentioned the weather, beaches, architecture or wine!

The following list is of 15 must-add experiences to any Sydney itinerary. Luckily, most of them are in Sydney's central business district, meaning you could easily combine a few of the following ideas.

1. Take a Private Sydney Harbour Boat Cruise

Nothing will set the stage for a few exciting days in Sydney better than sailing past the Opera House with a glass of Australian wine in hand – Welcome to Sydney.

2. Tour The Rocks

Do a private tour through the historic Rocks area, one of the oldest neighbourhoods and adjacent to the Harbour Bridge. Afterwards, having gained a sense of where you are, explore the Rock’s many art galleries and boutique shops.

Early morning surf

3. Learn to Surf

Take a half-day private surf lesson on Sydney’s legendary Bondi Beach.

4. Embrace Sydney’s Beach Culture

Spend the whole day at one of the many iconic beaches like Bondi, Manly, Coogee, and many more. Depending on your interests, swimming ability, and location, it is hard to say which Sydney beach is best, but Tamarama (be aware that it has a strong riptide and is not the best option for swimming, but it is famous with surfers and absolutely beautiful) and Balmoral Beach (a quiet and beautiful option near Taronga Zoo with good views and family-friendly) are two of the less crowded options.

5. Go on a Bike Tour

Explore the gorgeous Circular Quay and Darling Harbour on a private Sydney bicycle tour.

6. Enjoy the Coffee

Have a flat white, tall black, or whichever way you like your European-style coffee! Sydney is a city that screams coffee culture, with Café Two Black Sheep, on 580 George St, right downtown, absolutely worth the visit.

7. Go Window Shopping

Take in the Romanesque Revival architecture in the Queen Victoria Building (built in the 1890s and now home to the city’s most upscale shops). Indulge in the high-quality multi-ethnic cuisine in the mall food court here for a quick and delicious culinary journey with delicacies like the legendary Australian meat pie with Indian butter-chicken curry filling!

People on the beach

8. Go for a Coastal Walk

After a healthy Sydney breakfast of fresh fruit, avocadoes, and incredible coffee, work up an appetite for a seafood lunch by embarking on one of several beautiful coastal walks. There are magnificent views along the Bondi to Coogee Beach Coastal walk (just under 3 mi [6 km]), with well-marked, well-maintained trails. Finish your excursion by trying the champagne version of fish and chips: Barra’ and Chips, a local Barramundi seafood delicacy.

9. Take some Dawn Photos

Photographers know catching the early morning light is a no-brainer, so wake up early and head straight to Mrs. Macquarie’s Chair (near the Royal Botanic Gardens) for the best view of the Opera House and sailboats in the Harbour. It’s a must on all Australian tours.

10. Go Behind the Scenes at Sydney Wildlife World

Join the Behind-the-Scenes VIP small group tour at the Sydney Wildlife World, where you'll do much more than wander! Get up close and personal with many kinds of Australian wildlife, including cuddling the iconic Aussie koala.

11. Have a gourmet picnic in Hyde Park

This green oasis in the centre of Sydney’s central business district, conveniently near everything. The Sydney Picnic Company can prepare the perfect basket of fine foods (think European cheeses, a charcuterie board, stuffed olives and artisanal bread), and they will even deliver it to your hotel!

12. Enjoy the Local Beer

Have a schooner (small beer glass) at one of the many historic pubs or fantastic patios you'll find anywhere downtown. Try the Lord Nelson Brewery Pub & Hotel in the Rocks for phenomenal brews in an original Sydney setting.

13. Try Aussie Wines

Sample great Australian Wine at Wine Odyssey Australia, where a wine-tasting arrangement can include 44 wines (in 25ml samples)! This odyssey is an underrated wine-drinkers sanctuary, with a high-quality wine list of 120 different wines and a store with over 300 wines, mostly Australian. This experience would easily combine with your Rock’s area private tour and art gallery pursuit since it's on Argyle Street in the Rocks.

14. See the City from the Sky

Consider a flight over Sydney Harbour on a seaplane for the cherry on top experience!

15. Climb the Sydney Harbour Bridge

The Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb is not only great fun and good exercise, but you’ll get the most incredible views (and photographs) of Sydney!

Sydney enjoys a top-notch lineup of accommodation choices, especially for discerning travellers. It’s hard to have a favourite, as tastes vary, but the Park Hyatt is considered one of our Stays of Distinction. Situated between the majestic Sydney Opera House and the beautiful Harbour Bridge, this property sits at the epicentre of what makes Sydney a beautiful city. The location simply doesn’t get any better. With spacious guestrooms with private balconies that boast stunning views, a 24-hour butler service, and a sumptuous daily breakfast, you could easily spend your entire time here! But with the historic Rocks district and Circular Quay at your doorstep, you’ll find it hard to stay indoors. That said, after thoroughly exploring this world-class city, you won't have to go far for relaxation, as the Hyatt’s full-service day spa with a rooftop pool and sundeck is one of the city’s finest. Don’t worry, you’ve earned it!

Sydney and Melbourne are a great combination for first-time visitors to Australia, with Brisbane, Adelaide and/or the Outback added in, depending on how much time you have. Returnees should take in Perth, Darwin and the Kakadu National Park area and/or Tasmania if they can, plus spend some time in the cities they loved the first time around

We recently traveled to Portugal and had the most wonderful experience. As our first venture overseas, we decided to search online for travel assistance. We happened across Goway Travel and are so glad we did! Michael Keon, our Destination Specialist, is extremely proficient and knowledgeable in his profession. "Thorough" is an understatement. He assisted every step of the way from the moment we stepped on our flights, transfer arrangements, hotel accommodations, train travel and multiple tours/outings tailored to our specific needs/wish list. He provided unparalleled guidance and support during the planning process and was always available to discuss any questions/concerns. His communications were always prompt and concise. Without a doubt, our best trip to date...there will be no hesitation to contact Mr. Keon for future travels. Joanna Lynn Mays Michael Andrew Mays Joanna Mays

What made this experience great was Cedric Wai. Had a client going to Asia and this is Cedric's wheelhouse since he is from there. Everything was wonderful. Everything went smoothly. The individual tours were wonderful and all the guides were exceptional. A lot of traveling-the flight was very good on Cathay Pacific would highly recommend their airline seats were comfortable and spaced well. Being on an airplane for 16 hours sucks in general, but other than being a little sore from being stuck in one place all was good. Thank you so much for all your help and the trip was wonderful and everything that it should be! Next trip will be much more relaxing, sitting still for a while on a beach somewhere ha ha!Careen Sullivan

My destination specialist, Katie Stephenson was amazing from the onset. Her customer service, communication style and planning skills was so timely and top notch. Our trip was to Fiji, New Zealand and Australia, from Aug 4-22, 2026. The way she planned and booked the trip makes the experience convenient and enjoyable. The flexibility of payment makes the decision faster and attractive. Everything we need to know including contacts were readily available within our travel documents itinerary. Overall, I'll say it's money well spent and a lifetime experience particularly for my kids.Festus

We went on a highly customized comprehensive (though quick tour) of England and a bit of Scotland through Goway. Ingrid Aird did an amazing job of planning and arranging every detail with her deep experience, insight, thoughtfulness and creativity, tuning into the needs of each traveler; and she did so even though our decision to travel was rather spontaneous and last minute! Our family had the best time! We look forward to working with Ingrid and Goway again!Vilja Breiling
