Best Time to Visit

Discover Botswana's year-round allure for every traveler's taste.

There is no wrong time to visit Botswana, as this diverse Southern African nation offers something unique throughout the year. Its dry arid climate makes summers hot, and winters moderate with little rain to be seen year round. Ultimately, the choice of when to visit Botswana depends on your interests and priorities.

When is the ideal time to visit Botswana?

For most travellers, the dry winter months from May to September are often considered the prime time to visit Botswana. During this period, the weather is mild, and wildlife congregates around water sources, making it an excellent time for game viewing. The Okavango Delta and Chobe National Park are particularly appealing during this season, as animals are easier to spot in the dry landscapes.

In contrast, the wetter summer months, from November to March, bring lush greenery and a burst of new life. While wildlife is still abundant, the lush vegetation can make it slightly more challenging to spot animals. However, this is an ideal time for birdwatching as migratory birds arrive. The landscape transforms into a verdant wonderland, and it's a unique opportunity to experience Botswana's natural beauty in a different light.

When is Botswana's peak tourist season?

The months of July and August tend to see the most travellers flock to Botswana for safari. Extensive wildlife spotting and dry weather lends itself to the most ideal conditions. The flood peak levels of the Okavango Delta tends to provide plentiful safari animal sightings around watering holes. In the early mornings, some trips allow for guests to go on foot exploring sunrise in the Kalahari desert, spotting various flora and fauna, including large meerkat colonies. Evenings tend to lend themselves to particularly clear skies, stellar for stargazing.

Which is the most affordable time to visit Botswana?

Pricing for safari trips tends to decrease between the hot and dry season. The shoulder months of November, April, and May seem to be the most favourable affordable months for the best weather. These lower priced months are still excellent times to see wildlife, as there is truly never a shortage of wildlife action in Botswana.

How long should I plan to visit Botswana?

If you have a week or less, plan to book a trip in which you can fly directly into the camp or lodge. This maximizes your time, as challenging road conditions can make traveling by car lengthy. Longer trips allow you to see more spots in Botswana, such as Makgadikgadi Pans National Park, Moremi Game Reserve, and Chobe National Park. Consider adding even a couple more days to see another neighbouring African country, such as South Africa or Zimbabwe.

We recently traveled to Portugal and had the most wonderful experience. As our first venture overseas, we decided to search online for travel assistance. We happened across Goway Travel and are so glad we did! Michael Keon, our Destination Specialist, is extremely proficient and knowledgeable in his profession. "Thorough" is an understatement. He assisted every step of the way from the moment we stepped on our flights, transfer arrangements, hotel accommodations, train travel and multiple tours/outings tailored to our specific needs/wish list. He provided unparalleled guidance and support during the planning process and was always available to discuss any questions/concerns. His communications were always prompt and concise. Without a doubt, our best trip to date...there will be no hesitation to contact Mr. Keon for future travels. Joanna Lynn Mays Michael Andrew Mays Joanna Mays

What made this experience great was Cedric Wai. Had a client going to Asia and this is Cedric's wheelhouse since he is from there. Everything was wonderful. Everything went smoothly. The individual tours were wonderful and all the guides were exceptional. A lot of traveling-the flight was very good on Cathay Pacific would highly recommend their airline seats were comfortable and spaced well. Being on an airplane for 16 hours sucks in general, but other than being a little sore from being stuck in one place all was good. Thank you so much for all your help and the trip was wonderful and everything that it should be! Next trip will be much more relaxing, sitting still for a while on a beach somewhere ha ha!Careen Sullivan

My destination specialist, Katie Stephenson was amazing from the onset. Her customer service, communication style and planning skills was so timely and top notch. Our trip was to Fiji, New Zealand and Australia, from Aug 4-22, 2026. The way she planned and booked the trip makes the experience convenient and enjoyable. The flexibility of payment makes the decision faster and attractive. Everything we need to know including contacts were readily available within our travel documents itinerary. Overall, I'll say it's money well spent and a lifetime experience particularly for my kids.Festus

We went on a highly customized comprehensive (though quick tour) of England and a bit of Scotland through Goway. Ingrid Aird did an amazing job of planning and arranging every detail with her deep experience, insight, thoughtfulness and creativity, tuning into the needs of each traveler; and she did so even though our decision to travel was rather spontaneous and last minute! Our family had the best time! We look forward to working with Ingrid and Goway again!Vilja Breiling
