Despite being landlocked into the Western United States, Utah’s mystical terrain will feel like you’ve stepped foot on another planet. Mother Nature pats herself on the back for the job she’s done here in carving out the jagged red amphitheatres and plunging stone canyons of Utah’s five famous national parks: Arches, Canyonlands, Zion, Capitol Reef, and Bryce Canyon are Martian-like and desolate lands that must be seen to be believed.

In the south, roar down the long stretches of road into Monument Valley with its magical stone buttes, where Navajo guides can take you deep into the heart of the land. Switch to cooler tones in the west at the Bonneville Salt Flats, where a blinding white crust covers the cracked terrain. The east is home to Vernal, a colossal collection of prehistoric Jurassic dinosaur bones that leads into the Dinosaur National Monument, where you can hike, raft, and play archaeologist for the day.

Utah isn’t just all dry desert fun, which you can discover on the powdered slopes of Park City, where the Winter Olympics were held in 2002. The Olympics shook up Salt Lake City’s reputation as the religious centre of the Mormons, adding a new dimension of cosmopolitan flair to the state capital. Every January the city’s theatres glow with the lights of the Sundance Film Festival, a great pilgrimage for cinema lovers across the country. However, Temple Square and its Mormon buildings are not to be missed for their architectural and historical significance.
