Overview

Take a trip to Charlottetown on your Canada Vacation

Charlottetown is the capital and largest city of Prince Edward Island and sits on the island’s south shore. It is known as the “Cradle of Canada’s Confederation.”

Charlottetown might be small, but it’s bursting with big energy and Island hospitality. This seaside city is a historical hub full of culture, festivals and events, artisan shops, world-class restaurants and so much more. The city's streetscape contains many Victorian-era houses and buildings, and the waterfront offers breezy walking trails and parks and a photogenic harbour Wander along a boardwalk where lobster boats and sailboats cozy up together.

Explore the Victorian homes and elegant squares of Charlottetown. Beaconsfield Historic House is a fine example of Victorian architecture as are charming walking areas such as Great George Street and Old Charlotte Town.

Make a day trip – for some visitors, this is literally a pilgrimage! – to Green Gables Heritage Place and the Green Gables House, a National Historic Site located in Cavendish. Hundreds of thousands of visitors from around the world visit the house and the Haunted Wood and Balsam Hollow Trail, as described in the classic Canadian children’s book, “Anne of Green Gables.”

Or take a day trip to Covehead Harbour Lighthouse, the Gulf Shore Parkway, the rolling sand dunes of Brackley Beach, or explore nearby Argyle Shore, Provincial Park.

Finish with dinner – lobster rolls, steak and lobster, fish and chips – at one of the city’s many popular restaurants, such as Claddagh Oyster House, Hopyard pub, or Sims Corner Steakhouse & Oyster Bar.
