Essential Sights of Fiji

Islands

Fiji is a country made up of over 330 islands, about 1/3 of which are inhabited. The main tourist islands are Viti Levu, he largest island; Vanua Levu, the second largest island, Taveuni, the Mamanuca Island Group, Yasawa Island Group; Beqa Lagoon; Kadavu Island Group, Lau Group and several islands off Viti Levu and Taveuni.

Beaches

On Viti Levu the most beautiful beach (and the longest) is at Natadola, but there are many many others. Some of the most beautiful beaches anywhere are in the Yasawa Island group, from long powery sugar beaches to small palm rimmed coves..

Tropical rainforests

Fiji’s tropical hinterland is ideal for hiking to remote waterfalls, whitewater rafting/kayaking excursions, bird watching or learning about the rich biological diversity of the islands.

Lagoons and reefs

Fiji has some of the most beautiful turquoise lagoons in the South Pacific. Glass bottom boat tours allow you to see abundant marine life, or for those that want a closer look, try snorkeling in the warm, crystal clear water. Fiji is one of the top Scuba Diving destinations in the world, even being considered its ‘soft coral capital.’ Many of the reefs and lagoons are marine preserves, keeping them pristine and beautiful. A few of the more famous sites include Rainbow Reef, the Great White Wall, Beqa Lagoon (site of adrenalin-pumping shark dives), Namena Marine Preserve, Somosomo Straights, and Bligh Waters.

Hot Springs & Mud Pools

On Viti Levu, Sabeto Hot Springs or Tifajek Mud Pool and Hot Spring both offer hot mud pools to hop in and rejuvenate your skin with soft, warm mud. After you get out and the mud dries, take a series of dips/soaks in the hot springs to clean off and soak your cares away.

Salt Lake Kayak

If you’re staying at one of the resorts on Vanua Levu, a must do is the Salt Lake Kayak trip. A small channel from the coast to Salt Lake is a fun kayak or float trip that takes you to a place few tourists get to see.

Trekking

Want to experience staying in a Fijian Village? Take a hike across the highlands. Talanoa Treks offers 1 to 4 night treks as well as day trips into the highlands and interior of Fiji.

Whitewater Rafting/Kayaking

Full day trips are available departing Pacific Harbour on the Luva River, Middle and Upper Navua River. The Upper Navua trip (class II –III) is a particular favourite, with waterfalls, deep gorges, birds, and fruit bats amid  the lush rainforest. Also included is a riverside deli lunch.

Sawa-I-Lau Caves

If spending time at one of the upper Yasawa group resorts or taking a Blue Lagoon or Captain Cook Cruise, be sure to take in the Sawa-I-Lau Caves. Snorkel through an underwater passage and explore.

Circle Island Tour of Viti Levu

Not that many people do this, but the trip over the top of Viti Levu via the Kings Road, and returning via the Queens Road is well worth the full day it takes.

Top Activities and Experiences in Fiji

Village visit

When staying on an out island do one of the Village Visits or visit one of the village schools. On Sundays taking in a church service is great – no matter your persuasion.

Cultural interactions

Kava ceremonies, fire walking shows, Meke performances (traditional dance and song), and lovos (Fiji’s version of the Hawaiian luau) are all fun and educational experiences that give an insight to Fijian culture.

Sri Siv Subramaniya Temple

This beautiful and elaborate Hindu temple sits on the outskirts of Nadi. If you’re transferring from the airport to anywhere on the Coral Coast, there’s a good chance you’ll drive by it.

Hammocking

Simple, we know. But what better way to relax on a lazy afternoon than in a beachside hammock with a good book and beverage?

Watersports

Most of the island resorts offer free use of non-motorized sports equipment. Try snorkeling, kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, sailing, spy boards or just floating in the warm clear water. Most resorts also offer motorized water sports or have access to them, Scuba Diving is a must do if you’re certified (or, lessons are available and easy).

Up Up and Away

Scenic flights via helicopter, fixed wing or seaplane are fantastic. You can even try tandem skydiving for that extra adrenaline rush.

Cooking Class

Learn how to make a couple of traditional dishes, Fijian and Indo-Fijian, with the freshest ingredients, then have your masterpiece for lunch.

Essential Fiji Foods to Try

Kokoda

A bit like ceviche, but better.

Roufou, taro or dalo leaves

Fijians like to get creative with their spinach and greens, with several ways to serve.

Lovo

A feast prepared in an in-ground oven with lots of different items, all of them delicious.

Nama

Also known as “sea grapes” these are served as a fresh vegetable or garnish.

Indo-Fijian

There are curries on the menu of course, with fish, chicken, beef, lamb, goat, and vegetarian options. Try a dhal soup with roti, finished with unique Indian sweets and desserts.

Tips for Sustainable Travel

Tipping might not be customary in Fiji, but many resorts do have Staff Funds. Donations are shared by the entire staff, even those that make your stay better, that you never see.

Some properties also have an environmental fund to help protect their local area. Donating to this assists in beach/reef cleanup efforts and clean water projects.

Not to make it all about money, but village and school funds play a big part in helping local villages and schools. It’s a great way to give back to one of the most welcoming nations on earth.

Refuse  single use plastics whenever possible.

Please use a reef friendly sunscreen to protect both your skin, and marine life.

Where to Go Next

Try a stopover in Australia or New Zealand. Daily flights from Nadi make it easy and getting a taste of the destination primes you for your next South Pacific holiday.

If you really loved the island experience and want more try French Polynesia (Tahiti), the Cook Islands, Samoa or one of several island nation destinations in the South Pacific. You can even complete things with a Hawaii stopover pre or post trip.

For first-time visitors, I suggest splitting their stay to experience a few nights at a resort along the Coral Coast, where they could experience a visit to a local village, then end their trip at one of the islands in the Mamanucas to experience some different beaches and activities. For returning visitors, I recommend exploring a different group of islands, such as heading to one of the Northern Islands, which is a short flight from Nadi.

Our first trip with Goway was a total joy. Shalini worked with me to plan a trip for 5 adults to Portugal. She is a gem! Always responded quickly and offered great suggestions for activities, worked with our preferences and created an ideal itinerary for a week in Porto and Lisbon. The tours were excellent with engaging local guides. The food tour in Lisbon was a highlight. Everything was top notch - flight schedule, hotels, activities, even the weather! Patricia

It is with the utmost pleasure and heartfelt appreciation that I share my exceptional experience working with Taha Colombowala, Goway's distinguished Groups Specialist. Our journey together began in October 2023, when Taha took the helm in orchestrating what was to be a remarkable group trip to Ghana. When unforeseen circumstances necessitated a change in plans, Taha demonstrated his extraordinary expertise by recommending Morocco as an alternative destination — a suggestion that proved to be nothing short of absolutely brilliant! From the very first interaction to the final farewell, Taha has been a consummate professional in every sense of the word. His lightning-fast response times, encyclopedic knowledge of destinations, and remarkable ability to pivot seamlessly under pressure are truly second to none. What sets Taha apart, however, is not only his professional acumen but also his warm, patient, and genuinely enthusiastic attitude toward accommodating the unique needs and personalities of every member of our group. Taha Colombowala is, without question, a shining star within the Goway family, and an extraordinary ambassador for everything the brand represents. I cannot recommend him highly enough — he has exceeded every expectation and then some. Working with Taha has been an absolute privilege, and I look forward to many more incredible adventures ahead!DESIREE DUCKETT

We recently completed a custom Vietnam tour organized by Goway, and it was everything we asked for and more. We would definitely choose Goway again. The true highlights of our trip, however, were our two guides: Vu Dang and Thien. They truly made our experience unforgettable. Both were incredibly knowledgeable, thoughtful, and kind. Their pride in their Vietnamese heritage shone through in every conversation, making our learning experience both deep and engaging. We learned so much in such a short time, and it was always fascinating. I would highly recommend these two guides to anyone visiting Vietnam!Laura Derbyshire

Everything was expertly planned, from the drivers to the hotels to the tours to the flights. We particularly enjoyed Hobart and the animal sanctuary, Adelaide and the trip to Kangaroo Island, Melbourne and the evening tour with dinner and drinks, and Sydney with the private boat cruise of the Harbour. We will definitely use Goway again.SARA Wiebe

There were 4 travelers on this trip. All of us were in our late 70's. We started planning this trip 6 months prior to our travel date and had a lot of questions regarding this trip. Our Goway Travel Specialist, Karen Larrota, always answered our questions in a timely and complete manner. We traveled to Quito, Ecuador, the Galapagos, The Sacred Valley in Peru, Machu Picchu, and Cusco in Peru. Not only were the destinations and accommodations excellent, but every tour guide and driver were beyond excellent. The entire trip went smoothly every step of the way, which was amazing given the fact that there were numerous flights and hotels included in our package. We found out that the tour company that Goway used, Condor Travel, checked on us with our guide to make sure we were doing OK which we thought was very nice but also amusing as we are fairly fit older adults. Would also like to mention that we did a cruise thru the Galapagos on the Galapagos Legend which was arranged thru Go Galapagos - Kleintouurs. This portion of our tour was also excellent as were the wildlife guides and staff. We continue to discuss how wonderful this trip was with our family and friends and how wonderful this experience was. Would definately use Goway for our travel needs in the future.Dianne

Aylin is an exceptionally proficient advisor. Coordinating my clients simultaneously often feels like herding cats, but she has remained patient and accommodating through every modification and delay. Goway continues to be my go-to for complex itineraries, and they never disappoint.Nick Cron, ACC

My daughter and I had a wonderful 2 weeks in New Zealand! The country is so beautiful and the people so friendly. Our destination specialist did a great job with planning and organizing the itinerary, choosing our hotels, and organizing transportation. The hotels were absolutely beautiful and we had great views. We felt right at home and found all of the staff to be friendly and accommodating. There were no issues with our itinerary and our excursions we were always on the list. Our transportation was always ready and waiting for us. We want to thank Goway Travel for their hard work and patience with us in planning this trip. Any changes that needed to be made were communicated timely. We also want to thank you for the beautiful weather during the entire 2 weeks it was perfect every day 😀. It was a memorable trip that we will never forget and we will think of Goway when we plan our next adventure. Because it was not just a vacation; it was an adventure!Connie Wenhardt
