Overview

Take a trip to Recife on your Brazil Vacation

When on Brazil tours, consider a visit to the capital and largest city in the state of Pernambuco, Recife, a major port on the Atlantic Ocean. Its name comes from the coral reefs that are located near the city’s shores.

Recife was one of the first areas to be settled by the Portuguese and remained a small port until the Dutch arrived in 1630. Dutch settlers greatly improved conditions in Recife but were expelled in 1654. Due to its location on the ocean, the city grew into a major trading centre dealing mainly in sugarcane and slaves. Today, Recife is known for medicine as well as for being a major player in software development. It is also becoming a popular tourist destination on a Brazil vacation package hosting some of the country's most stunning beaches.

There is much to see and do in Recife as the city houses several museums and historical buildings. Many people come to visit neighbouring Olinda, founded in the 16th century, the city’s historic downtown area was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982. Recife has been nicknamed “the Venice of Brazil” due to the many inlets, canals and bridges that crisscross the city allowing for interesting walking tours. Within the city are well-developed hotels and restaurants that welcome tourists on Brazil tours. However, Recife’s biggest draw is its beaches, including Porto de Galinhas often voted one of Brazil’s best beaches.

Brazil is great to visit all year round, but December to March is ideal for experiencing the vibrant summer energy and major events like Carnaval. For those who want to search for wildlife in the Amazon & Pantanal, I would suggest April to October

Travelers must plan for diverse weather as the country ranges from tropical in the north (Amazon rainforest -with high humidity and rain) to temperate in the south, with hot, dry inland areas and a semi-arid Northeast region experiencing less rain

There is so much to love about Brazil. Not only does it have stunning natural beauty - think the Amazon rainforest or its famous beaches - but it has such a vibrant and diverse culture filled with music, dance and delicious food
