Overview
Take a Trip to Chapel Bridge on your Switzerland Vacation
Chapel Bridge, also known as Kapellbrücke, stands at the heart of Lucerne, symbolizing the charm of Switzerland's medieval towns. Named after nearby St. Peter's Chapel, this iconic wooden bridge dates back to the 14th century, making it the oldest covered bridge in Europe. Stretching across 670 ft (204 m), Chapel Bridge links Old Town and New Town and is exclusively for pedestrians.
Despite a devastating fire in 1993 that destroyed many interior paintings, Chapel Bridge still boasts remnants of 17th-century artwork. It remains a masterpiece of architecture and history after its restoration efforts bringing back its former glory. Chapel Bridge is easily accessible from the city's main railway station, situated on the Reuss River in Lucerne's centre. Visitors can explore it on foot or as part of a guided city tour.
