Athens

Athens is the capital of Greece. Its history goes back over 3,000 years. It is one of the oldest inhabited cities in Europe and the birthplace of democracy and the Olympics. It’s also the main transportation hub of Greece. It is a city of different contrasts from ancient Athens with the Parthenon, Acropolis, and Statue of Zeus to modern Athens with cafes, shops, hotels, spas and clubs.

The Acropolis

The Acropolis, or the Sacred Rock, was a fortress and military base all the way back in the neolithic period. Over time, it changed into a religious centre and was dedicated to the worship of the goddess Athena. During the classical period the Parthenon was built here. Persians destroyed the Acropolis in 480BC. It was rebuilt by Pericles, who was the founder of Athenian democracy, and has kept this form into the current day.

Delphi

Delphi was a religious sanctuary and had the most famous oracle of ancient Greece. It was sacred to the god Apollo. Delphi is located on Mt. Parnassus near Corinth. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Meteora Monasteries

Some of the most photographed sites in Greece, the Meteora Monasteries are located on hard to access rock towers. At one time, there were as many as 24 monasteries built on the rocks. Today, there are six active monasteries.

Rhodes

Rhodes is one of the Dodecanese Islands and has been inhabited since prehistoric times. It is the fourth biggest Greek Island and as it is close to both Asia and Europe, it has a long history of being claimed by countries in both areas. Ultimately, it took until 1945 for Rhodes to be recognized as Greek again.

Crete is the largest island in Greece, with an extensive history with many civilizations contributing to its present culture. You’ll get a taste for the cultural diversity by exploring Crete, seeing Venetian fortresses, Byzantine structures, and Minoan frescoes, among other cultural artifacts. There are also many beaches, good hiking trails, and plenty of history.

Santorini

Santorini is one of the most popular islands in Greece. It’s home to spectacular views, all types of lodging options, lots of things to do, and great food. It is part of the Cyclades Islands and was created after a huge eruption that occurred in the 16th century BC. Santorini is best defined by its white buildings with blue tops, volcanic caldera, and turquoise waters.

The canal was started by Emperor Nero, who was interrupted during the building and returned back to Rome. It was completed in 1893. The Greek Government ran out of funds to widen the canal, so only smaller boats can go through it. It is 8m deep and 24.6m wide. There are plans to widen it in the future.

Tips for Sustainable Travel

Istron Bay on Crete

Conserve water at the hotels you stay in by reusing towels and turning off the air conditioning and the lights when you leave your room. Buy a reusable water bottle that can be collapsed so you can pack it in a corner of your suitcase. Take a reusable shopping bag with you. Many fold down to a very small size and are easy to travel with you. Use reef-friendly sunscreen and eco-friendly bug spray. Be sure not to take shells or sand from the beaches, as it is illegal to remove shells, sand, or sea animals from many beaches in Greece

Where to Go Next

Since Greece is so centralized it is a convenient jumping off spot for travel to many areas of the world. You can easily combine Greece with Italy or Croatia. Many people also go to Greece after visits to Paris or London.

It’s fairly easy to travel between islands by plane or ferry, but I love renting a dune buggy once I’m there—it’s more fun than taxis.

Our trip to Japan was great. All our Goway arrangements preformed like clockwork and the guides for the tours were wonderful. Unfortunately, Mt. Fuji was in total fog but at least the lunch was very good and so was the drum solo, also our tour guide kept our spirits up ( she was the best). Taryn picked hotels that were very convenient to the meeting point of our tours which was much appreciated and organized all aspects of our trip perfectly. So from our airport pickup to our last day in Tokyo everything ran very smoothly so we have used Goway before and will certainly use it again and reccommend Goway to others.JW

We have used Goway Travel for previous trips and have been very happy with their excellent service. Our last trip to New Zealand and Australia was no exception. Our agent, Lori Mazzono, got tuned into the sort of trip we were hoping to have immediately. The various booking she provided were, without exception, exceptional and exactly what we envisioned, We really don't think we would have changed anything. tBruce Belshaw

Mary was absolutely fantastic to work with. She was incredibly responsive and quick to assist with every update and change my clients made throughout the planning process. Her expertise was invaluable, from recommending the perfect resorts to advising on the best way to travel between the islands. My clients loved every moment of their trip, especially their resort stays and overwater bungalow experiences. As this was their honeymoon, creating a seamless and memorable journey was so important, and Mary exceeded expectations. They rated their experience a 5 out of 5 and could not have been happier. Thank you, Mary, for your outstanding support and attention to detail. I truly appreciated your partnership and would not hesitate to work with you again for future South Pacific Island bookings. We had a wonderful trip to Peru for 11 days organized by Goway. Overall the trip was great, we loved our guides throughout, some of the hotels were truly amazing and it was helpful having everything organized and having a point person to ask questions and check in while we were there. Some main highlights were: 1) Machu Picchu- I am so glad we did two tours, because the weather was perfect for views, but also had an opportunity to see Machu Picchu more in depth with a knowledgeable and friendly guide and had a little extra time in Aguas Calientes to shop, explore and even visit the butterfly garden and do some birdwatching. 2) Cusco especially the Hotel Aranwa Cusco. The hotel was incredible, excellent service, modern updates, it was a true highlight of the trip. Cusco itself was also a highlight, loved our half day tour, plus getting ideas for our guide on what else to see in our free time and where to eat. 3) Lima- Aloft Miraflores was another highlight, very modern, nice pool and the best breakfast out of the hotels we stayed in. The location in Miraflores was also perfect, as there were plenty of restaurants, cafes and attractions nearby. 4) Everyone at Condor was great, from ensuring we had all our documents, tickets and itinerary to even stepping in to get water and agua Florida when we were feeling the altitude sickness the first hours in Cusco. Most of our rides and transfers were very comfortable and made the trip run smooth through all the different locations. I have been telling my friends and family how wonderful the experience with Goway has been for our Peru adventure. Eric Paul Schatzel
