Overview
Take a trip to Brandenburg Gate on your Germany Vacation
Brandenburg Gate is an 18th-century monument in Pariser Platz, Berlin. It was built on the orders of the King of Prussia, Frederick William II. During the Cold War, it was a symbol of division, standing between East and West Germany. Following the reunification of Germany, it became emblematic of unity and peace and is today one of Germany's best-known landmarks.
The gate's design is based on the Propylaea, the gateway to the Acropolis of Athens. It is made up of 12 Doric columns, six to each side, forming five passageways. The gate features carvings and bas-reliefs, most of them depicting stories of Heracles, the legendary Greco-Roman hero. At the top of a gate is a Quadriga, representing the goddess of victory driving a chariot pulled by four horses. After taking in the historic landmark, you can stroll Pariser Platz and visit its cafes and restaurants.
