Overview
Take a trip to Notre Dame Cathedral on your France Vacation
The historic Notre-Dame is set to open at the end of 2024, five years after its roof collapsed in a fire incident. The cathedral's wooden frame was known as the Forest for it took 52 acres of wood to build. A number of historic events have been held within Notre-Dame, including the coronations of England's Henry VI and Napoleon Bonaparte, and beatification of Joan of Arc.
The French Gothic structure on the Île de la Cité is known for its architectural richness, and an important symbol of the Catholic faith, housing what is believed to be the crown of thorns placed on Jesus' head before the Crucifixion. The Notre-Dame has undergone a number of restorations and renovations over the years. Interesting architecture and relics of history abound in the cathedral, from its beautiful stained-glass windows to its giant 13th century bells, and the looming gargoyles and perched chimera, accessible by climbing 387 steps. The Notre-Dame organ has 8,000 pipes and is believed to be the largest organ in France. The cathedral is open from 7:45 am to 6:45pm every day, with an extended closing time of 7:15pm on Sundays. There is no admission fee.
