Overview

Take a trip to Playa del Carmen on your Mexico vacation.

Playa del Carmen is located on the Riviera Maya coastal strip on the Yucatan Peninsula 70 kilometres/45 miles south of Cancun. Originally a small fishing village, it has now developed into a sophisticated resort with a distinctly European feel. It is possibly Mexico’s trendiest resort. This is evident on Mexico vacations as one strolls down the pedestrian-only main thoroughfare, Fifth Avenue, locally known as Quinta Avenida. It is the place to see and be seen in Playa del Carmen. By day it is busy with people browsing the shops and boutiques and at night, roving musicians entertain diners in the many restaurants and bars. many scuba divers and snorkelers due to its location on a coral reef and where one can view stingrays, moray eels and sea turtles.

There is easy access to the island of Cozumel reached by a short ferry ride and several Mayan sites including Tulum. An interesting site is Xcaret Theme Park, nature-based and offers the visitor a selection of attractions such as a replica of a Mayan village and the ability to go swimming with dolphins on a Mexico vacation.

I love learning about Nicaragua's culture and experiencing its Spanish influence in some cities. I was only there for five days, but I'll never forget how delicious the food was and how welcoming and extremely polite the people were.

The Day of the Dead in Guatemala is a great local tradition where people gather to fly giant, intricately decorated kites to honour the dead.

The colourful Spanish architecture, the beautiful scenery, particularly the stunning lakes, and the Mayan ruins are what I love most about Guatemala!
