Overview

Take a Trip to Northland on your New Zealand Vacation

Northland is New Zealand’s least populated region and is mainly inhabited along the east coast. It stretches from just north of Auckland to the northern tip of the North Island, 300 kilometres/180 miles in length. It enjoys a sub-tropical climate all year round, perfect for a New Zealand vacation. The west coast is dominated by long straight beaches including Ninety Mile Beach which truthfully is only 88 kilometres/55 miles long.

The east coast is more rugged and dotted with attractive small bays and is a good place to play golf, swim, surf or dive on a New Zealand vacation. One of the more important tourist areas is the Bay of Islands, a very pretty region made up of around 150 islands and a wonderful place to both relax and explore, also somewhere to see dolphins, whales and penguins.

In the far north, Cape Reinga, not quite the most northern point of the country but almost, is where the Pacific Ocean and the Tasman Sea collide. It is also known for its prominent lighthouse.

The only city of any size is Whangarei on the east coast where one can sit at a quayside café and watch the sailing boats bobbing in the water and also visit the many local art galleries on New Zealand Tours.

The food in New Zealand is incredible, and New Zealanders are rightly proud of their paddock to plate cuisine. Almost everything is sustainably grown and processed, from lamb and seafood to vegetables and fruit.
