Lombok Island is located in the province of West Nusa Tenggara and is situated just east of the island of Bali, separated by the Lombok Strait, and west of the island of Sumbawa, separated by the Alas Strait. The provincial capital and largest city on the island are Mataram.
Dominated by the centrally-located stratovolcano of Mt. Rinjani, Indonesia’s second highest, Lombok Island features beautiful beaches, waterfalls, and surrounding islets. The highlands of Lombok are a mostly undeveloped forest, while the lowlands are highly cultivated, producing rice, soybeans, coffee, tobacco, cotton, coconuts, bananas, and various spices.
Though only 25 miles away from the island of Bali, Lombok Island is strongly influenced by the restrained and quiet nature of Sasak culture, giving the island a very different vibe compared to the tourism bustle of Bali.
Promoted as an ‘unspoiled Bali’, Lombok Island offers visitors the natural beauty of an untouched countryside as well as a glimpse into the traditional way of life by its island dwellers. Culturally and linguistically closely related to the Balinese, though not religiously, the majority of Sasak people practice the local Muslim faith and traditions.
Lombok Island has maintained its rich and enduring indigenous culture, having withstood the pressure of modernity. Though not as well-known as its neighbour to its west, tourism is starting to grow as more visitors seek the island’s Indonesian authenticity and relaxed way of life.

We started planning this trip 6 months prior to our travel date and had a lot of questions regarding this trip. Our Goway Travel Specialist, Karen Larrota, always answered our questions in a timely and complete manner. We traveled to Quito, Ecuador, the Galapagos, The Sacred Valley in Peru, Machu Picchu, and Cusco in Peru. Not only were the destinations and accommodations excellent, but every tour guide and driver were beyond excellent. The entire trip went smoothly every step of the way, which was amazing given the fact that there were numerous flights and hotels included in our package. We found out that the tour company that Goway used, Condor Travel, checked on us with our guide to make sure we were doing OK which we thought was very nice but also amusing as we are fairly fit older adults. Would also like to mention that we did a cruise thru the Galapagos on the Galapagos Legend which was arranged thru Go Galapagos - Kleintouurs. This portion of our tour was also excellent as were the wildlife guides and staff. We continue to discuss how wonderful this trip was with our family and friends and how wonderful this experience was.
