This bustling bridge sees 80,000 vehicles and over 1 million pedestrians crossing each day, along with countless cattle and bicycles. Beneath the eastern end of the Howrah Bridge lies Mullik Ghat, a vibrant and photogenic flower market. Over 125 years old, it is the largest flower market in East India, with around 3,000 flower growers from surrounding areas selling their goods daily. The scene is a feast for the senses: vibrant garlands of marigolds in yellow and orange are carried by women on their heads or arms, men unload trucks, and baskets of flowers are carried with grace up the steps leading to the bridge. Below, life flows along the river as men, women, and children wash, pray, work, and eat amidst the hustle and bustle. It's a captivating experience, but be mindful of where you step as the market teems with activity! Next, we head to Kumartolly, Kolkata's famous potter's colony, where skilled artisans create clay idols of Hindu gods and goddesses for religious ceremonies and festivals. Traditionally, families would invite the potter to stay with them for weeks before a festival, where he would sculpt the idol in their presence. Every morning, the family would gather to watch the transformation of a mass of clay and straw into a divine figure. Our 2-week trip to Normandy, Switzerland and Italy after we disembarked from the Queen Mary 2 in Southampton in mid-May was superb. Michael Keon did an amazing job of putting together highlights for us to see and visit with the short time we had. All the train reservations, private and small group tours and transportations were very well coordinated, on time, and usually exceeded our expectations. Drivers were courteous and knowledgeable. Mike did a wonderful job getting everything coordinated, in spite of our almost “last minute” booking. I booked a month-long trip through GOWAY back in 1989 for Australia, New Zealand and Fiji, and they were superb then. So I tried them again, and found the entire organization to be even better. Mike was quick to respond to any questions that came up regarding booksings and times, regardless of the 6-hour time difference. Just superb! I recently went on an African Safari with my brother-in-law and sister and another couple who I knew. The entire experience was absolutely unbelievable. The complete details were flawlessly coordinated from the transfers to the breathtaking lodges. Our guides Peter showed us Kenya and Maulid Tanzania were very knowledgeable and very sharp eyes for finding the animals.
