The flight to Paro is an unforgettable experience, offering breathtaking views of the Himalayan region and an exhilarating descent into the Kingdom of Bhutan. Upon arrival, you'll be greeted by the crisp, pristine mountain air-a refreshing introduction to this serene country. After completing immigration formalities and collecting your luggage, our representative will warmly welcome you with a traditional 'tashi khaddar,' a white scarf symbolizing auspicious blessings for guests. From there, travel by road to Thimphu, Bhutan's capital. The scenic drive winds through the picturesque Paro Valley, eventually reaching Chuzom, where the Paro and Thimphu rivers meet. En route, you'll pass Tachog Lhakhang, a temple built by the legendary engineer Thangtong Gyalpo, known for introducing suspension bridges to Bhutan and Tibet. The iron bridge leading to the temple, restored in 2005 using traditional techniques, offers a unique opportunity for a short roundtrip walk of about 50 minutes. Thimphu, Bhutan's capital and cultural hub, blends modern development with ancient traditions and is famously free of traffic lights. In the afternoon, visit the National Memorial Chorten, a stunning white structure topped with a golden spire, where locals gather to pray, spin prayer wheels, and circumambulate the monument. Conclude your day with an exploratory stroll through the lively main street and market area of Thimphu.

Begin your morning with a short drive to Buddha Dordenma, a magnificent statue perched atop a hill in Kuenselphodrang Nature Park. This 51.5-meter-tall bronze statue, gilded in gold, fulfills an 8th-century prophecy by Terton Pema Lingpa and radiates peace and happiness across the world. Inside, 125,000 smaller bronze and gold-gilded Buddha statues further amplify its spiritual significance. Visitors can also meditate in a serene area designated at Buddha Point. Next, set off on a scenic hike from Buddha Dordenma to Changangkha Lhakhang, an easy 1.5-hour walk. Along the trail, colorful prayer flags flutter in the breeze, and the forest, with its tall pines, birch trees, and blooming rhododendrons, creates a peaceful ambiance. The well-maintained path includes charming gazebos offering panoramic views. Visit Changangkha Lhakhang, an ancient temple founded by Lama Phajo Drugom Shigpo in the 12th century and expanded by his son in the 13th century. The temple houses a central statue of Chenrezig, the deity of compassion with eleven heads. For centuries, families have visited to seek blessings for their newborns, continuing a beloved tradition of receiving protective rituals and sacred threads for their children. Continue with a visit to the Thimphu Post Office, where you can create personalized postage stamps using your favorite photos. These unique stamps, which are officially usable, serve as a memorable keepsake of your Bhutanese journey, guided by the friendly postal staff. After lunch, explore the Textile Museum, a cultural treasure showcasing Bhutan's rich heritage in textile arts. Supported by Her Majesty Queen Ashi Sangay Choden, the museum's exhibits highlight intricate weaving techniques, religious textiles, indigenous fibers, and a glimpse into the Royal collection, offering a vivid insight into Bhutan's craftsmanship. Next, visit the National Institute for Zorig Chusum, also known as the Arts and Crafts School. Established in 1971, it preserves Bhutan's traditional crafts through courses in the country's 13 art forms, including painting, sculpture, and woodwork. End the day at Trashichhoedzong, the "Fortress of the Glorious Religion," which serves as the seat of government, religion, and the monarchy's throne room. Originally built in 1641 and reconstructed in the 1960s using traditional methods without nails or architectural plans, it is a masterpiece of Bhutanese architecture. In the evening, take a stroll through Thimphu's city center, visiting the bustling Centenary Farmers Market, where locals gather to sell fresh produce and handicrafts, and the colorful Ka Ja Thom (local market), offering an authentic taste of Bhutanese life.

Thimphu to Gangtey

After breakfast, drive to Dochu-la Pass (3,088m/10,130ft), stopping briefly to admire the stunning views and the chorten, mani wall, and prayer flags that adorn the highest point of the road. On clear days, the following peaks are visible from the pass (left to right): Masagang (7,158m), Tsendagang (6,960m), Terigang (7,060m), Jejegangphugang (7,158m), Kangphugang (7,170m), Zongphugang (7,060m), and the majestic Gangkar Puensum, Bhutan's highest peak at 7,570m. At Dochula Pass, the 108 Druk Wangyal Chortens, built by Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuk, the eldest Queen Mother, are arranged in three layers--forty-five in the bottom layer, thirty-six in the middle, and twenty-seven at the top, surrounding the central chorten. Next, continue your drive to Gangtey, passing through dense oak and rhododendron forests. The Gangtey Valley is one of Bhutan's most breathtaking and pristine landscapes, with its wide, flat terrain a rare sight in a country known for its tightly enclosed valleys. The valley's openness offers a feeling of vast space, a surprising contrast after the climb through dense forests. A few kilometers beyond Gangtey Monastery, the village of Phobjikha lies at the valley floor. In the afternoon, explore the Phobjikha Valley, the winter home of the black-necked cranes that migrate from northern arid regions to the milder climate here. The valley is traversed by two picturesque rivers, Nakay Chhu (black water) and Gay Chhu (white water). Visit the Black-necked Crane Information Centre, located at the edge of the forest and wetland. The center features an observation room with telescopes for optimal crane viewing and displays outlining the region's natural and cultural history. A small gift shop offers locally-made handicrafts. In the evening, attend a prayer ceremony at Gangtey Monastery and take a leisurely stroll through the charming Gangtey village.

Gangtey to Punakha

After breakfast, visit Gangtey Goempa (monastery), perched on a hill overlooking the valley floor. It is the largest Nyingmapa monastery in Bhutan and the only one on the western side of the Black Mountains. Founded in 1613 by Pema Trinley, the grandson of the revered Nyingmapa saint Pema Lingpa, Gangtey Monastery remains a center for teachings of Pema Lingpa's religious traditions. The surrounding village is home to the families of the 140 Gomchens who maintain the monastery. Next, enjoy a walk along the Gangtey Nature Trail, which offers a delightful way to experience the beauty of Phobjikha Valley. Starting from a hilltop near Gangtey Goempa, the trail leads downhill through meadows filled with wildflowers, past the village of Semchubara, through lush forests, and into the open valley. The walk ends at a local school, passing a chorten and Khewa Lhakhang along the way. (Approx. 5.5 km, 2-hour walk) Participate in a Blessing & Butter Lamp Lighting Ceremony at Khewa Lhakhang, an important spiritual practice in Bhutanese Buddhism. Monks will recite prayers and mantras, invoking blessings, while the lighting of butter lamps symbolizes the illumination of wisdom and the dispelling of darkness and ignorance. The lamps, made from yak butter, offer a gentle light representing enlightenment and guidance on the path to liberation. After lunch, drive to Punakha, which served as Bhutan's capital until 1955. Situated at an elevation of 1,300 meters above sea level, Punakha enjoys a temperate climate and fertile land, producing abundant crops and fruits. It remains a popular year-round destination. On your way, stop at Wangduephodrang Dzong. Positioned on a high ridge between the Punak Tsang Chhu and Dang Chhu rivers, the dzong offers panoramic views of the valley below. Its strategic location made it an important fortress for protecting routes to Punakha, Trongsa, Dagana, and Thimphu.

Discovering Punakha

Today, embark on a scenic hike to the Khamsum Yuelley Namgel Chorten, built to eliminate negative forces and promote peace and harmony in the world. The chorten, perched above the Punakha Valley, offers stunning views across the Mo Chhu River and towards the Gasa mountain peaks. After lunch, visit the Punakha Dzong, or "Palace of Great Happiness," built in 1637 by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal at the junction of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers. This majestic dzong, which served as the center of religious and administrative power in Bhutan, features courtyards, religious statues, and a six-story tower topped with a gold dome, all steeped in history and spiritual significance. Next, take a short trip to Chimi Lhakhang, the "Temple of Fertility," located on a hill in the heart of the valley. It is believed that couples who pray here are blessed with children. The walk to the temple leads through rice fields and the village of Pana, offering a rare glimpse into the daily life of the local community. In the evening, enjoy the hotel at leisure or explore the markets of Punakha and Wangdue.

Punakha to Paro

After breakfast, drive to Paro along a scenic highway. Paro Valley, steeped in culture and surrounded by natural beauty, is home to many of Bhutan's oldest temples, monasteries, the National Museum, and the country's only international airport. The majestic Mount Chomolhari (7,314m) towers over the northern end of the valley, while its glacial waters flow through deep gorges to form the Paro River. Paro is also one of the kingdom's most fertile valleys, known for its red rice grown in terraced fields. After lunch, visit Ta Dzong, originally built as a watchtower and now housing the National Museum. The museum's extensive collection includes antique thangkha paintings, textiles, weapons, armor, household objects, and natural and historical artifacts. A short walk from Ta Dzong brings you to Rinpung Dzong (Paro Dzong), a historic fortress with fascinating stories. Inside, you'll find fine wall paintings depicting Buddhist teachings, including scenes from the life of Milarepa and the cosmic Mandala. Next, visit a traditional farmhouse, where you can experience Bhutanese hospitality, try local cuisine, and observe traditional farming practices. These charming homes, often adorned with intricate woodwork and vibrant colors, offer a unique insight into Bhutanese culture. You'll also have the chance to try archery, Bhutan's national sport. In the evening, explore Paro city center and its local market.

After breakfast, embark on a hike to Taktshang Monastery (Tiger's Nest), one of Bhutan's most iconic sites. Perched 900m above the Paro valley, the monastery is said to be the meditation site of Guru Rinpoche, who arrived here on the back of a tigress. Recognized as a sacred site, it has attracted pilgrims, including Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal in 1646, and remains an essential visit for all Bhutanese. In the late afternoon, drive to the restored Drukgyel Dzong, built in 1646 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal to commemorate a military victory. Despite a fire in 1951, the dzong's historical significance endures. On clear days, you can enjoy stunning views of Mount Chomolhari (7,314m) from the village below. On the way back to Paro town, stop at Kyichu Lhakhang, a 7th-century temple built by Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo as one of the 108 temples in the Himalayas, marking the introduction of Buddhism to Bhutan.

Our 2-week trip to Normandy, Switzerland and Italy after we disembarked from the Queen Mary 2 in Southampton in mid-May was superb.
