Overview
Take a trip to Limpopo on your South Africa Vacation
Limpopo is the northernmost province in South Africa and was named after the Limpopo River that runs along its northern borders. The province shares international borders with Botswana to the west and north-west, Zimbabwe to the north and north-east and Mozambique to the east. Domestic borders include three provinces, Mpumalanga, Gauteng and the North West Province.
The province has been nicknamed the “Great North” and much of it has remained unchanged for centuries. Limpopo has a rich cultural heritage and is home to many important archaeological sites on a South Africa vacation.
The Makapansgat Valley hosts numerous caves in which fossils that date back 3.3 million years ago have been discovered. The Mapungubwe Cultural Landscape is an UNESCO World Heritage Site because it demonstrates the rise and fall of the first indigenous kingdom in southern Africa between 900-1300 AD.
The northern section of Kruger National Park, South Africa’s flagship national park is located in Limpopo. This area of the park is renowned for its large herds of elephants and buffalo as well as for its sable and bird populations. There are several private and public game reserves found throughout the province and the wide expanse of Limpopo gives an air of a truly untamed Africa.
