Overview
Take a trip to Pemba on your Mozambique Vacation
Built over rolling hills in northern Mozambique, Pemba is a port city and capital of the province of Cabo Delgado found on a peninsula in Pemba Bay. The population of the city offers a mixture of African, Portuguese and Arabic influences on a Mozambique vacation.
Once a small fishing village, Pemba became a commercial centre after is was founded by the Niassa Company (a Portuguese royal company) in 1904 at the peninsula’s southwestern tip. It was originally christened Porto Amélia after a Portuguese queen but was renamed Pemba at the end of Portuguese rule in 1975.
Today Pemba is known for its Portuguese colonial architecture. Locally, it is famous for traditional healers and voodoo practitioners who are skilled in centuries old medicinal traditions. Tourism is still a largely untapped resource, yet it is this absence of large groups of people on travel to Mozambique that often draws visitors looking for a remote retreat.
A year round tropical climate with warm waters makes Pemba a haven for water sports and is becoming increasingly popular with diving enthusiasts. The area serves as a gateway to both the Quirimbas Archipelago (twenty-nine islands that dot the northern coast) and to the Niassa Nature Reserve, the largest protected area in the countr on a Mozambique vacation.
