Take a trip to Pemba on your Mozambique vacation.
Built over rolling hills in northern Mozambique, Pemba is a port city and capital of the province of Cabo Delgado found on a peninsula in Pemba Bay. The population of the city offers a mixture of African, Portuguese and Arabic influences on a Mozambique vacation.
Once a small fishing village, Pemba became a commercial centre after is was founded by the Niassa Company (a Portuguese royal company) in 1904 at the peninsula’s southwestern tip. It was originally christened Porto Amélia after a Portuguese queen but was renamed Pemba at the end of Portuguese rule in 1975.
A year round tropical climate with warm waters makes Pemba a haven for water sports and is becoming increasingly popular with diving enthusiasts. The area serves as a gateway to both the Quirimbas Archipelago (twenty-nine islands that dot the northern coast) and to the Niassa Nature Reserve, the largest protected area in the countr on a Mozambiqu8e vacation.
