Overview
Take a trip to Selinda Reserve on your Botswana Vacation
Selinda Reserve is a 300,000-acre private wildlife sanctuary found in northern Botswana. It is located to the west of Chobe, therefore, offering excellent game viewing without as many tourists as other reserves and parks in the country on Botswana safaris.
The Selinda Reserve follows the course of the Selinda Spillway which connects the Okavango to the Linyanti river system. It serves as a major route for the game that migrates between the two systems. The area is made up of dry grasslands with waterholes and palm-fringed “islands” as well as Leadwood trees which are found throughout the reserve.
For many years up to 80% of Selinda was used for big trophy hunting. Today, the reserve is very serious about conservation. Hunting has been banned and much of the area is used for photographic safaris instead. The Selinda Reserve is a good place to view antelope species like roan, sable and eland. Cheetahs can be seen in the north on the floodplains and lions also live in the area. Elephants are common, and so too are buffalo, giraffes, zebras and wildebeest. The endangered African wild dog is found in Selinda and often dens close to camps. Selinda’s location away from major tourist routes allows the reserve to offer a truly authentic African experience on Botswana safaris.
What do the experts say?
Some travellers believe that Botswana is the most expensive destination in Africa. But there are many ways to travel in Botswana to lower the price point. You just have to know the right camps and lodges
The country is one of the only countries in Southern Africa that offers traditional road safaris, walking safaris, water (motorboat, canoe, and traditional mokoro) safaris
May - September is considered the prime time for game viewing, particularly in the Okavango Delta and Chobe National Park. Animals are easier to spot as they gather around water sources, and the vegetation is less dense
